Loving Kindness Meditation Developing the serene intention for happiness and freedom from suffering.

Beginning with compassion for yourself,

This heart-centered practice engages phrases that remind you of your deepest aspirations for well-being as you extend goodwill outward.

Begin by finding an upright yet relaxed seated posture,

Allowing your spine to gently lengthen.

Take a few grounding breaths,

Softening any areas of excess tension as you exhale.

When you feel ready,

You can let your eyes gently close.

In this meditation practice,

We will cultivate feelings of warmth,

Care and compassion,

First toward ourselves and then extending that loving energy outward.

We will use phrases that remind us of our innermost aspirations for well-being and happiness.

As you breathe in,

Bring to mind the sincere intention to befriend yourself more fully,

To honor the fundamental goodness and beauty that lives within you.

As you exhale,

Let go of any self-judgment or inner critic that may arise.

Begin silently reciting these phrases of loving kindness toward yourself.

May I be happy.

May I be peaceful.

May I be free from suffering.

You can adapt these words to what feels most authentic and touching for you.

Maybe something like,

May I accept myself as I am.

May I be kind to myself in this moment.

Let's take 30 seconds to recite these loving kindness phrases toward yourself.

As you offer yourself these caring intentions,

You may find it helpful to visualize being surrounded and bathed by a soft,

Warm light of acceptance and compassion.

Let these words and images permeate your mind and body.

If you notice areas of resistance or struggle in being open to self-compassion,

Simply notice this without judgment.

You can have self-compassion for your struggle with self-compassion,

Gently returning to wishing yourself happiness and ease.

Continue extending loving kindness toward yourself for a few more minutes.

You might place a hand over your heart and repeat,

May I be happy.

May I be peaceful.

May my heart open.

Let's do this for 30 seconds.

Now imagine a loved one who is easy to care about,

Whether alive or not.

Call their image or essence to mind.

As you send warmth and goodwill toward them,

You can recite,

May you be happy.

May you be peaceful.

May you live with ease.

Let's do this for 15 seconds.

Feel the natural ripples of compassion extending from your heart outward.

You can visualize them bathed in light and care,

Temporarily unbound from any expectations or tensions in the relationship.

Once you've tended to a loved one,

You can extend the wishes more universally,

Using the phrases,

May all beings be happy.

May all beings be peaceful.

May all beings live without ease and good fortune.

Imagine this current of kindness reaching out beyond loved ones to dear friends,

To neighbors,

To strangers,

To all people,

To all lifeforms,

To all existence.

A warm embrace of compassion shared freely.

Let's do this for 15 seconds,

Repeating the phrases,

May all beings be happy.

May all beings be peaceful.

May all beings live without ease and good fortune.

You may notice your heart naturally opening and expanding to include all beings,

Humans,

Plants,

Animals,

Creatures unseen.

Each and everyone deserving of happiness and freedom from suffering.

Let's use the phrases,

May all beings be happy,

Peaceful and free.

May we all awaken to our true nature.

Let's repeat this for 15 seconds.

May all beings be happy,

Peaceful and free.

May we all awaken to our true nature.

Feel this river of loving kindness flowing outward while also circling back to yourself.

Breathe compassion in.

Breathe compassion out as the boundaries between self and other soften and dissolve.

As we slowly transition back,

Mentally acknowledge the courage and wisdom in practicing loving kindness for yourself and all beings,

Wishing peace and wellness for the interconnected whole.

When you are ready,

Open your eyes while continuing to send goodwill to all those around you in this present moment.

Recite this heart of kindness as you transition into the rest of your day.

You may continue repeating these phrases of loving kindness any time your mind gets caught up in judgment,

Ill will or separation.

Keep meeting each experience with the healing waters of compassion,

Being the living embodiment of wisdom and care.

This concludes the lesson Loving Kindness.
