Good evening,
Or maybe good morning.
Maybe you're just getting home from work.
Maybe you're a second shifter,
A third shifter,
And the world is wide awake when your body is asking for rest.
Sleeping during the daytime can feel harder,
The light presses in,
The sounds continue,
Your mind stays alert because the sun is still shining.
So today,
Or tonight,
We gently reset,
We close out the light.
If you're able,
Make your space darker,
Shut the blinds,
Turn off overhead lights,
Dim what you can,
And if the light still finds you,
Place an eye pillow gently over your eyes,
Let it signal to your brain it's safe now,
You're off duty,
Your shift is over.
This meditation is inspired by yoga nidra,
Sometimes called yogic sleep.
It's not about forcing sleep,
It's about guiding the body into such deep relaxation that sleep happens naturally.
You don't need to perform,
You only need to listen.
Take a slow breath in through your nose,
And a gentle exhale through your mouth.
Let your body land.
Sleep is not something you chase,
It is something you allow.
Sleep is the golden chain that ties health and our bodies together.
Bring your awareness to your right hand.
Right thumb,
Second finger,
Third finger,
Fourth finger,
Pinky finger,
Palm of the hand,
Back of the hand,
Upper arm,
Shoulder.
Now move to your left hand.
Right hand,
Second finger,
Third,
Fourth finger,
Pinky finger,
Back of the hand,
Wrist,
Forearm.
Bring awareness to your forehead,
Let it smooth,
Eyebrows soft,
Eyes resting heavy behind the lids,
Cheeks relaxed,
Jaw unclenching,
Tongue resting,
Shoulders melting,
Arms heavy,
Chest rising and falling gently,
Right ankle,
Ankle.
As you let go,
Your body remembers how to sleep,
Even if your mind forgets.
With each exhale,
Turn it down slightly,
Thoughts grow softer,
Edges blur,
Your body feels lighter,
The brightness fades,
If outside light tries to interrupt,
Imagine thick velvet sealing out the day.
You are cocooned,
Even if the sun is shining,
Even if the world is moving.
If you wake later,
There is nothing wrong,
Simply return to your breath,
Return to the your nervous system is recalibrating,
Repairing,
Resetting.
Your shift is over,
Your body is restoring itself,
Close out the light,
Let the body grow heavy,
Let sleep find you,
I'll stay quiet now,
As the music carries you the rest of the way.
.
.
Sweet deep rest.
