There is a phrase used in nervous system work.
That I want to offer you today.
The window of tolerance.
It describes the space where you can feel things.
Fully feel them.
Without being overwhelmed by them.
Without shutting down.
Without spinning out.
Most of us spend our lives not knowing this window exists.
We move directly from fine to too much.
From okay to flooded.
And we assume that's just how feeling works.
The window can widen.
Slowly with practice.
With exactly what we're doing right now.
Let yourself arrive completely.
Feel the surface beneath you.
The weight of your body settling into.
Take a breath in.
Not deep.
Not forced.
Just the breath your body chooses.
And let it go.
Notice that you survive that exhale.
That another breath came.
That it always does.
This is how the window widens.
One breath at a time.
One moment of not being swept away.
Think for a moment about what it feels like.
When you're outside the window.
Some of you know the high end.
The anxiety,
The racing,
The grip that won't release.
The sense that everything is urgent,
That you have to solve it now or something will break.
Some of you know the low end.
The shutdown,
The numbness,
The going through motions.
The feeling of being somewhere behind your own eyes.
Both are the nervous system doing its job.
Both are attempts at protection.
Neither is where you have to live.
Right now.
In this practice.
We are inside the window.
You are feeling something.
Perhaps discomfort,
Perhaps stillness.
Without being consumed by it.
You that is the window.
That is exactly it.
Notice what it feels like to be here.
Not fine,
Not numb,
Just.
.
.
Breathing present,
Not swept away.
Remember this sensation.
Your body will recognize it again.
Repeat with me.
I am inside the window right now.
I can feel this without being destroyed by it.
My capacity to tolerate is growing.
I return to this again and again.
Let your awareness move through your body slowly.
There is no destination.
No correct answer.
Begin with your breath.
Is it in your chest or your belly?
Neither is wrong.
Just notice.
Your throat.
Is there anything there?
Tightness,
Openness,
Nothing at all.
Whatever is there.
Let it be witness.
That's all.
Your shoulders.
This is where many of us hold the weight of what we're managing.
You don't have to put it down.
But you can notice how heavy it is You can let the noticing itself be a kind of rest.
The seed of the nervous system's older intelligence.
What does it feel right now?
You don't have to have a word for it.
Just let your attention be there for a moment.
When we widen the window.
We are not becoming people who don't feel things.
We are becoming people who can feel things.
Without those things taking over completely We are building the capacity to sit with grief.
Without collapsing into it.
I sit with fear without running from it.
I just sit with love without needing to control it.
This is not a small thing.
This is the work of a lifetime.
And you are doing it.
Right now.
In this breath.
Stay with your body for a few more minutes.
Notice any place that has softened since we began.
Even slightly,
Even one centimeter of release.
Would that be enough?
Progress is not measured in transformation.
It is measured in the willingness to return.
You return today.
That is the whole practice.
I am inside the window right now.
I can feel this without being destroyed by it.
My capacity to tolerate is growing.
I return to this again.
And again.
When you're ready to come back.
Do it slowly.
Wiggle your fingers.
Feel the room around you.
Carry with you just this.
The knowledge that the window exists.
That you've been inside it today.
That you can find your way back.
It will be here.
You will find it again.
Come back slowly.
