There is a particular kind of tiredness that comes when your body is ready for rest,
But your mind seems to have other plans.
The day has ended,
You are finally in bed,
And yet your thoughts keep moving.
You remember something that happened earlier,
Replay a conversation,
Think about tomorrow,
Or suddenly find yourself worrying about something that seemed unimportant just a few hours ago.
One thought leads to another,
And the mind keeps going even though the body is asking for rest.
When this happens,
It can be tempting to try to make the thoughts stop.
But the more we resist them,
The more attention we often give them.
So instead of trying to create a completely quiet mind,
We can begin by changing our relationship with what is already there.
A thought can arise without needing to be followed.
A worry can appear without needing to be solved.
Something can feel unfinished without requiring your attention tonight.
Rest doesn't necessarily begin when the mind becomes empty.
Sometimes it begins when we stop asking every thought to take us somewhere.
You can allow your mind to move gently in the background while bringing your attention back to the present moment,
Back to your breath,
Back to the feeling of being here.
Tonight,
You are simply learning that you can have thoughts and still rest,
And that you don't have to follow every thought that comes your way.
And now,
Let's move into a gentle meditation practice.
As you settle into this moment,
Allow yourself to arrive slowly.
Let your body find a comfortable position and give yourself permission to take these next few minutes simply to be.
Feel the support beneath you.
The softness around you.
And the quiet that begins to gather as the day comes to an end.
Bring your attention gently to your breathing.
Feel the natural movement of each breath as it comes and goes,
Without needing to change it.
Let your breathing become a quiet place to rest your attention.
You may notice that your mind is still moving,
Carrying thoughts from the day or reaching toward tomorrow.
Let those thoughts have their space.
You don't need to follow them.
You can simply notice that the mind is here doing what minds do.
Perhaps you can imagine your thoughts as small clouds moving slowly across the night sky.
Some may be clear and familiar.
Others may seem completely random.
You don't need to name them or understand them.
You can watch them drift through the open space of your awareness,
Allowing each one to move at its own pace.
If a thought catches your attention,
Gently notice it and allow your awareness to return to something simple.
The rhythm of your breathing.
The weight of your body.
The feeling of the bed beneath you.
These small sensations are here,
Quietly reminding you that this moment is enough.
Let yourself become curious about what it feels like to leave a thought unfinished.
A question can remain open.
A plan can wait.
A memory can simply be a memory.
You You don't need to carry everything with you into the night.
Some things can be left exactly where they are,
Trusting that you can meet them again when a new day arrives.
With each breath,
Allow a little more softness around the activity of your mind.
You don't need to create silence.
You can simply make room for quiet.
You can rest alongside whatever thoughts are passing through,
Letting them become less important with every moment you spend here.
And as we begin to come toward the end of this meditation,
Allow yourself to stay here for a few more breaths.
Feel the support beneath you.
Feel the natural movement of your breath.
Let the night hold you for a while.
And when you feel ready,
Slowly open your eyes.
The day has brought you here and here is enough.
You can let your thoughts wander gently in the distance while you give yourself permission to rest.
