Sometimes falling asleep can become another task we feel we have to accomplish.
We get into bed hoping to sleep quickly,
And when it doesn't happen,
We begin paying closer attention.
We check the time,
Count the hours we have left,
Imagine how tired we'll feel tomorrow,
And wonder why our body isn't doing what it's supposed to do.
Without realizing it,
Rest becomes something we are trying to achieve.
And the more important sleep feels,
The more pressure we can place on ourselves to make it happen.
The mind becomes alert,
Watching for signs that sleep is coming,
And every moment of wakefulness can begin to feel like a problem.
Instead of allowing the body to settle naturally,
We become caught in the effort of trying to make something happen that cannot really be forced.
What if for tonight you didn't have to make yourself fall asleep?
What if you could simply allow yourself to rest?
You can lie here,
Breathe,
Feel the support beneath you and let this moment be enough.
Sleep may come when it comes.
You don't have to monitor it or measure it.
Rest is not something you have to earn by falling asleep quickly.
There can be value in simply lying down,
Allowing your body to be still,
Giving your mind a place to soften,
And letting yourself exist without needing to accomplish anything.
You don't need to know how long it will take.
You don't need to calculate how much sleep you have left.
You don't need to solve tomorrow from the middle of tonight.
For now,
You can release the expectation and allow yourself to simply be here.
Sometimes,
When we stop asking ourselves to sleep,
We create the space in which sleep can arrive naturally.
And even in the moments before it does,
You are allowed to rest.
And now,
Let's move into the practice.
Let your body find its own comfortable position.
And allow your breathing to move naturally.
You can simply begin to soften into the quiet of this moment.
Now imagine that you are lying somewhere peaceful beneath a wide night sky.
The air is still.
The surroundings are quiet.
And there is nothing asking anything of you.
Above you,
The sky stretches endlessly,
Spacious and open.
You can simply rest beneath it,
Knowing that the night is already here,
Holding you exactly as you are.
Imagine that each thought,
Each worry,
And each little effort to figure something out is like a small light appearing somewhere in that sky.
You notice it and then you allow it to remain at a distance.
You can let the sky hold everything for you tonight.
Now imagine yourself lying on soft ground.
Completely supported.
Feel the earth beneath you receiving your weight.
Allowing every part of your body to become a little heavier,
A little more at ease.
Perhaps you can imagine that the night itself is gently reminding you.
You don't have to make anything happen.
You don't have to know when sleep will arrive.
You can simply remain here.
Breathing,
Resting,
Allowing this moment to be exactly what it is.
If sleep comes,
You can welcome it.
If you remain awake for a while,
You can continue resting here.
You are allowed to simply exist within this quiet space.
Stay here for a few gentle breaths,
Allowing yourself to sink a little more deeply into the feeling of being supported.
You Let the night be spacious enough.
And let yourself be held within that spaciousness.
And slowly bring your awareness back to the feeling of your body.
Notice the surface beneath you.
The air around you.
The gentle rhythm of your breathing.
Feel yourself here in this present moment.
Take one more gentle breath and allow this sense of calm to stay with you.
Let your body remain soft,
Your breathing easy,
And your mind free to settle at its own pace.
