Welcome to this meditation tonight.
This meditation is going to help you to release night time anxiety or bedtime rumination,
Helping your mind to unwind.
So take your time to find a comfortable position where you can rest.
Allow your body to settle into your bed and take one deeper breath in now and a gentle unhurried breath out.
We all know that night time can sometimes be when the mind becomes most active.
Thoughts and feelings that might have stayed quiet during the day may suddenly demand your attention.
Plans,
Memories,
Maybe questions and concerns.
So if this is happening for you tonight,
Know that you're not doing anything wrong.
This is sometimes what the mind does when the world becomes quiet.
The mind has more space to act,
To move,
To communicate.
So for the next few minutes we're not going to try to solve anything.
We're just creating space to help your mind to calm and slow down.
So come back to noticing your breath and feel the gentle movement of your belly rising as you breathe in and its gentle release and softening as you breathe out.
Let your breath be slow but natural,
Nothing forced,
Nothing controlled.
Now imagine placing all of your thoughts,
Worries into a small basket beside your bed.
You don't need to throw them away.
This action is just helping you to set them down until tomorrow.
You may find that your mind brings in another thought and that's okay.
When that happens,
Place that one in the basket too.
These are plans for tomorrow.
Into the basket.
Questions that your mind wants to answer,
Again into the basket.
Worries and concerns,
Put those in the basket.
Nothing needs solving tonight.
Tonight is for you to rest,
Your mind as well as your body.
Now bring your awareness to the gentle rhythm of your breathing again,
Following your breath in.
If your thoughts come back again,
Just notice them kindly and once again,
Place them in the basket beside your bed.
You might imagine closing the lid of the basket gently.
Everything can wait until morning.
Allow your awareness to widen into the space of the room around you.
Noticing the quiet or gentle distant sounds.
Noticing the stillness of the night and the steady rhythm of your breathing as your body becomes heavier,
More settled,
More at ease.
You are allowed to rest.
Your mind does not have to keep watch all night.
For these moments,
Simply breathe.
Let your mind gently float away.
Allow your body to soften and rest in the quiet of the night.
