Welcome to this week's weekly update.
Yesterday I shared the PTSD reset series.
Today I want to explain why it actually works.
When someone experiences trauma the nervous system doesn't just move on,
It adapts.
It shifts into survival mode,
Fight,
Flight or freeze.
And here's the problem,
The body doesn't always recognize when the threat is over.
So even when life looks safe on the outside internally the system is still running the same program.
Heart rate elevated,
Breathing shallow,
Mind scanning for danger.
It doesn't exist.
Believe me,
I know this.
It becomes your baseline.
This is where the breath comes in and it certainly has for me in my journey.
Breathing is one of the few systems in the body that is both automatic and under your control.
When you breathe through your nose and especially when you slow down your exhale,
You activate the parasympathetic nervous system.
That's the branch responsible for calm,
Recovery and safety.
The key is the exhale.
A longer controlled exhale sends a direct message to the brain,
We're safe.
And in that mechanism the vagus nerve is activated more and slows down the heart rate.
So this is not intellectually but physiologically and that's important because trauma isn't just stored in thoughts,
It's stored in your body.
So instead of trying to think your way out of it,
You can breathe your way out of it.
Now layered on top of that,
The series also draws on principles by Maxwell Maltz's Psycho-Cybernetics.
Maltz's core idea was simple but powerful.
Your nervous system will always act in line with the self-image you hold internally.
So if your internal identity is built around fear,
Hypervigilance or lack of control,
Your body will keep reinforcing that pattern.
Even when your circumstances have changed.
So across the seven sessions we're doing two things at once.
First,
Using the breath to regulate the nervous system in real time,
Shifting you out of survival mode.
And secondly,
Using mental rehearsal to begin updating the self-image.
Not forcing it but repeating it,
Feeling it,
Installing it.
A version of you that is calm,
In control and able to trust your own body again.
Because once the nervous system feels safe and the self-images change,
The response changes.
That's when people start to notice they're not reacting,
Their body settles faster and triggers lose their intensity.
That's not luck,
That's training.
That's the science behind the series.
