Welcome to this Taoist reflection.
The bamboo tree.
For patience and trust.
I'm so glad you're here.
So take a moment to settle into your comfy space,
Warm and cozy.
Then your body begins to soften.
Your shoulders are dropping down from your ears.
And your breath is moving naturally.
Flowing softly in.
Gently out.
Without effort.
So,
Maybe today you've been tending something in your life,
Maybe A dream.
A healing process.
A new beginning.
Or even a quiet hope in your heart.
Sometimes when we look closely.
It can feel as though nothing is changing.
But today's reflection comes from an old story that is often shared in the wisdom traditions of China.
It's a story about patience,
Trust.
And the quiet intelligence of nature.
It's the Chinese bamboo tree.
When the seed of this bamboo is first planted,
Something curious happens.
For the first year,
Nothing appears above the soil.
The person who is caring for the seed must still water it.
Protect it,
And nurture the Earth around it.
But when they look at the ground,
There is no visible sign of growth.
The second year passes.
But still nothing breaks the surface.
The seed it still continues to be watered,
Still cared for.
And still patiently tended.
To anyone watching,
It might appear that the effort is wasted.
And then the third year arrives.
But still the Earth remains quiet.
No green shoot.
No sign of life.
Many people might give up by now,
Believing the seed has failed.
And yet the gardener who understands the nature of bamboo continues.
Watering.
Waiting,
And then trusting.
Then the fourth year comes and goes.
Still the soil looks unchanged.
But something extraordinary is happening where no one can see.
Because deep beneath the ground.
The bamboo is growing.
Its roots are spreading.
And they are strengthening.
They are creating a vast underground network.
Quietly preparing for what is to come.
And then,
In the fifth year,
Something remarkable happens.
A small shoot finally appears above the soil.
And then within only a few weeks.
This bamboo can grow nearly 80 feet tall.
For someone seeing it for the first time.
It might look as if the growth happened suddenly.
But the truth is very different.
Because the real growth.
Had been taking place all along.
Hidden.
Be patient.
Invisible to the eye.
Because for years,
The bamboo was building the roots strong enough to support the height it would one day reach.
Without those unseen roots.
The bamboo would never have been able to stand tall.
So,
Our lives,
They often follow a similar rhythm.
There are those seasons when we are working,
Learning,
Healing and growing.
And yet,
Sometimes it seems as though nothing is changing.
And we might feel we are standing still.
But beneath the surface,
Something deeper is unfolding.
That is your strength.
Your understanding.
And your resilience.
And just like the bamboo,
The roots of your growth.
Are often formed in the quiet seasons.
In those moments when progress cannot yet be seen.
And Taoist wisdom reminds us that nature does not rush.
And yet everything unfolds in its proper time.
So continue watering your roots and keep nurturing what matters to you.
Trust that the unseen work within us.
Is preparing for something strong,
Steady.
And lasting.
Gently bring your awareness back to your breath.
Breathing in slowly.
Breathing out softly.
Feel your body relaxing just a little more with each breath.
Now you see a small bamboo resting beneath the soil.
It's held in the quiet darkness of the Earth.
It's safe here.
It's protected.
There is no rush.
Beneath the surface,
Something important is happening.
The roots are beginning to form.
Tiny strands are reaching outward through the soil.
And they are finding stability.
Nourishment.
And each breath that you take now can feel like watering those roots.
Breathe in nourishment.
Breathe out patience.
Maybe there is something in your own life.
But is still growing quietly.
A change that you are making.
A healing that is unfolding.
Or maybe a dream that has not yet fully emerged.
But you feel that beneath the surface of your life.
Strong roots are beginning to form.
And these are the roots of courage.
The roots of wisdom.
The roots of quiet resilience.
So even though you may be not able to see the progress.
It doesn't mean that growth is not happening.
So,
Just stay with this breath for a moment.
Breathing in,
Trust.
Breathing out,
Patience.
Once more,
Breathing in.
Trust.
And breathing out.
Patience.
Your life is unfolding in its own beautiful rhythm.
Wonderful.
So,
As you move through the next few days,
You might carry this image of the bamboo with you.
So whenever you feel impatient or uncertain.
Just remember the quiet years beneath the soil.
And remember that those unseen roots may already be forming in your life.
So your task now is simply to continue watering what matters.
With care,
With patience,
With trust.
Because one day in its own time,
The growth that once seemed invisible may rise naturally into the light.
Just as the bamboo does,
Tall.
Strong.
And deeply rooted.
And as Lao Tzu once said.
Nature does not hurry,
Yet everything is accomplished.
So just take a moment to come back to this present moment.
Breathe in softly.
Breathe out gently.
When you're ready.
Slowly open your eyes,
Roll your shoulders,
That feels good.
Give yourself a gentle stretch.
You are here right now in this moment.
So thank you so much for joining me.
On this reflection of the bamboo tree.
Namaste,
My friend.
