Emotions,

Both pleasant and unpleasant,

Are an integral part of our human experience.

While we often seek out comfort and joy,

It's equally important to develop the capacity to stay with and understand our unpleasant emotions.

This mindful moment will guide you through the practice of staying with and embracing these emotions with self-compassion.

Find a quiet and comfortable place to sit,

Closing your eyes if you'd like,

And take a few deep breaths,

Allowing yourself to settle into the present moment.

With each inhalation,

Invite a sense of calm and presence,

And with each exhalation,

Release any tension or distractions.

Begin by scanning your body to become aware of any physical sensations that might be associated with your unpleasant emotions.

Pay attention to any tightness,

Heaviness,

Or discomfort.

As you identify these sensations,

Approach them with a gentle and non-judgmental awareness.

Now,

Turn your attention to your emotions.

Try to name the emotion that you're currently experiencing.

It could be anger,

Sadness,

Fear,

Frustration,

Or any other unpleasant feeling.

Recognize that emotions are natural responses to your experiences,

And that just like your experiences,

Your emotions are impermanent.

Imagine that you're sitting beside a still pond,

And your unpleasant emotion is like a stone that's been thrown into the water.

Watch the ripples on the surface of the pond,

Acknowledging the waves of your emotion without resistance.

As you observe the emotion,

Notice any thoughts or stories that accompany it.

These thoughts may be related to the past,

The future,

Or the circumstances that triggered the emotion.

Instead of getting lost in these thoughts,

Gently bring your awareness back to the sensation of the emotion itself.

Now,

Direct your attention to your breath.

Your breath serves as an anchor,

Allowing you to stay present with your emotions without becoming overwhelmed.

As you inhale,

Invite a sense of calm and acceptance.

As you exhale,

Release any resistance or aversion to the unpleasant emotion.

Breathe in calm and acceptance,

And breathe out any resistance or aversion to the unpleasant emotion.

Visualize your breath flowing into the center of the emotion,

Like a gentle breeze that soothes and cools the intensity of the feeling.

As you breathe out,

Imagine releasing the tension and the tightness that's associated with the emotion.

Embrace the emotion with compassion and kindness.

Imagine that you're offering it a seat beside you,

Acknowledging its presence without judgment.

Treat the emotion as you would a friend who's going through a difficult time,

Offering it understanding and support.

As you continue to breathe and stay with the emotion,

Notice how it changes and evolves.

Emotions aren't static.

They're like passing clouds in the sky,

Constantly shifting and eventually dissipating.

Allow yourself to be curious about the ebb and flow of the emotion.

Remember that it's okay to feel uncomfortable at times.

Unpleasant emotions are part of the rich tapestry of our human experience.

By staying with these unpleasant emotions and acknowledging their presence,

You're cultivating emotional resilience and inner strength.

As we conclude this mindful moment together,

Slowly open your eyes if they were closed.

Carry the practice of staying with unpleasant emotions with you into your day.

Know that by embracing and understanding these emotions with mindfulness and compassion,

You can navigate the complexities of your inner world with greater wisdom and self-compassion.
