Hello again and welcome.
This meditation is called Why Does Uncertainty Feel Uncomfortable?
Have you ever noticed how uncomfortable it can feel when you don't know what is going to happen?
There can be a level of fear in the uncertainty of not knowing.
Not knowing what will happen,
Not knowing what comes next,
Not knowing whether things will be okay or turn out as you hope them to.
And when there is uncertainty,
There is also no predictability.
Without predictability,
There is no certainty.
Now,
Without certainty,
One's sense of being in control.
Can begin.
To fade.
And this is where the mind can begin to reach forward.
It starts projecting towards an imagined future or outcome.
Trying to know,
Trying to predict.
Trying to prepare.
Trying to understand the unknowable,
Trying to create some sense of certainty and control.
When this happens,
When I achieved that.
When I finally know when everything is settled.
Then I can return to a more certain existence.
But notice.
The future is always imagined.
And when the future arrives,
It arrives as this moment of now.
Then the mind can simply create another future.
Another thing to know,
Another thing to achieve,
Another thing to secure.
And so fulfillment,
One's sense of the familiar,
Is continually placed somewhere else,
Somewhere ahead.
Constantly at a reach.
While the very river of life is only ever actually flowing right here.
Right now.
So we can easily miss its most subtle experiences and nuances because we are somewhere else.
So perhaps one's discomfort isn't simply uncertainty.
Perhaps it is the inability to control what is uncertain,
What is unknowable.
And beneath that,
There can be a subtle belief that if I don't know something may go wrong.
So we hang on to what we know,
To what we believe,
To what we hope for.
To what we imagine.
Anything that gives us a perceived sense of comfort,
Joy,
Or pleasure.
But what if we didn't?
What if,
Just for a moment,
There was nothing to hold on to?
No certainty,
No predictability,
No imagined future that needs to be secured.
Just the open experience of this moment,
Just as it is.
And perhaps the deeper question is then,
Do you really believe that life is going to forsake you?
When you stop trying to know what comes next.
What happens when there is no longer a need to control the unfolding?
When you can rest in the unknowability of being open,
Spacious,
Spontaneous.
Without needing to know what comes next.
Does life need you to know what comes next in order for life to continue unfolding?
For you to be happy or content.
Or is life already unfolding without the you of control or knowing?
Naturally,
Spontaneously.
While in your mind's eye you are somewhere else.
There is a natural and effortless unfolding in the now.
Life is constantly revealing,
Unfolding.
Already expressing,
Already giving of itself,
Moment by moment.
And perhaps trust is not knowing what will happen.
But trusting what is already happening without the me needing to know more.
Life will reveal itself as the next moment arrives.
And when it does,
It will simply be now.
And perhaps there's nothing to surrender to.
Except the freedom of the unknowable itself.
To top trying to know what cannot yet be known and trust the natural unfolding of life as it is revealing itself now.
Surrender to the nowness is a resting in what is already happening,
Through the ease and flow of being.
Open spaces.
Nothing to hold on to,
Nothing to control,
Nothing to become.
Simply resting in what is already happening.
Trusting the natural unfolding of life,
Moment by moment.
In the openness and spaciousness of one's being.
And notice what happens when you let go of the need to know.
There can be a lightness,
A sense of ease,
A sense of flow.
And perhaps a quiet sense of deep peace as you come to rest with what is simply here.
The nervous system can begin to settle,
No longer needing to remain in the restlessness of anticipation of what might happen.
It can simply settle into the calm of now.
Nothing needs to be figured out,
Nothing needs to be anticipated,
Nothing needs to be controlled.
And in that absence of needing to know,
There could be a natural ease in the body.
A spaciousness,
A quietness,
A sense of simply being here.
Perhaps this is the freedom of not knowing.
Not a freedom from uncertainty.
But a freedom from the need to make uncertainty certain.
The future can remain unknowable while now remains completely available.
And perhaps that is enough.
These sensations,
These sounds.
This awareness.
Nothing is missing from what is here.
The mind may continue to reach outwards tomorrow,
But the flow of life is here.
Always here.
Simply unfolding.
As the now.
