Hello again and welcome.
Today I'd like to explore a question that many of us have quietly asked ourselves.
Why do I feel unhappy?
Many times life appears to be just fine.
There may be no obvious reason to feel this way.
Things may be going well.
And there may be people who deeply care and love us.
There may be moments of great beauty and unconditional kindness.
Somewhere within.
There can still be a quiet sense that something is incomplete.
A subtle dissatisfaction.
A feeling that something could be different.
Is something.
Needs to change.
Perhaps the first response is to look outside,
Maybe if circumstances were different.
Maybe if someone understood me more.
Maybe if I achieved something important.
Maybe if I became a better version of myself.
Then I would feel happier.
But perhaps before searching for the answer.
We can simply pause and look more closely.
What is unhappiness?
Is it something that exists within this present moment?
Or does it arise through the way we interpret this moment?
Take this moment for example.
Simply notice,
Right now,
There are sensations,
There are sounds,
There is breathing,
There is life unfolding all around us.
And then A thought appears.
Should this be different?
Before that thought,
Was there unhappiness?
Or was this simply what is present?
As it is.
Could it be that unhappiness begins through the way the thoughts interpret this moment?
Comparing the way things are.
With the way it imagines things should be.
What is happening with what we hoped would happen.
This way of interpreting life.
Creates a sense of distance.
And within that distance there can appear a feeling of dissatisfaction.
Not because life itself is incomplete.
But because thought has created an image of how life should be.
Perhaps much of human unhappiness comes from this movement.
The movement of wanting this moment.
To become another moment.
The movement of trying to arrive somewhere else.
The movement of believing that peace and happiness exist.
In the future.
The perceived future is an imagined reality.
Thought continues searching.
For the next place,
For the next achievement.
For the next experience that finally will bring fulfilment.
The search continues,
But perhaps happiness is not found.
By completing a search.
That can never bring what is imagined.
Perhaps happiness is discovered when the movement of searching and interpreting becomes quiet.
Not because life becomes perfect.
Not because every difficulty disappears.
But because there is no longer a constant demand for this moment to be something other than what it is.
Life can still change.
Challenges can still arise.
Growth can still happen.
But perhaps there is a difference between.
Allowing life to unfold.
And constantly asking life.
To become something else.
When the struggle with this present moment begins to soften.
Something simple begins to be recognised.
A quietness,
A natural ease.
Not created,
Not achieved,
Simply recognized in the moment.
As it is.
Perhaps the deepest question is not.
How do I become happy?
Perhaps the deepest question is.
What interpretation is creating the feeling that happiness is not already here.
And in looking deeply one may discover.
That what has been searching for has never truly been absent.
Thank you for being here and for sharing this moment together.
Until next time,
Be gentle with yourself and simply allow life.
Be exactly as it naturally is.
If this contemplation has resonated with you,
You're warmly invited and welcome to explore the rest of this growing collection.
Each one is another doorway.
To the same self-recognition.
