After your shift has ended,
After you've given your time,
Your energy,
Your care,
This is your moment to come back to yourself.
This practice is a space to gently set down what you've been carrying,
To release the weight of the day,
And to prepare your body and mind for rest.
Welcome to the Whispering Willow.
I'm Diana,
And I'm here to remind you that it's ok to set your day down and rest.
You've been an excellent nurse today.
You've taken care of others with your whole heart.
You've given your all.
Now it's time to relax.
Find a comfortable place where you can fully settle,
Either lying down or sitting in a supportive position.
Let your body relax,
Allowing the surface beneath you to hold your weight.
If it feels comfortable,
Close your eyes.
Focus your attention on your breath.
Take a slow breath in through your nose and exhale through your mouth.
You can sigh or yawn if you'd like.
Right now,
You're not trying to change your breathing,
You're just noticing it.
As you continue breathing,
Let your shoulders drop a little or sink a little deeper into the surface if you're lying down.
Feel the heaviness of your body as it sinks into the surface supporting you.
Continue breathing naturally,
Noticing it,
But letting it be.
Understand that there is nothing you need to do right now.
No decisions to make,
No one needing your attention or care.
This time is just for you.
Notice your feet,
Your legs,
Your hips and back,
Your shoulders,
Your arms,
Your hands,
Your knees,
Your neck,
Your face and jaw,
Your forehead.
Without trying to change anything,
Simply observe where you might be holding tension.
Bring your breath to the areas that feel tight.
Allow your body to begin unwinding.
Give it permission to do so.
No one needs you right now.
It's okay to focus on yourself.
With each inhale,
Feel relaxation flowing through you.
With each exhale,
Imagine the day beginning to loosen its grip on you.
Now bring to mind the moments from your shift.
Not to analyze them or replay them in detail or worry over them,
But simply to acknowledge them.
Think of the patients you cared for,
The conversations you had,
The decisions you made.
There should be no evaluation or judgment here.
Just acknowledgement of your day.
You showed up and you gave what you could.
Now imagine placing each of those moments into a basket,
A box,
Or maybe a soft cloth you can gently fold around them.
You are not discarding them.
You are just setting them down for the night.
They will be there tomorrow if you need them,
But right now,
There is no need for them to stay with you.
Visualize yourself placing that container somewhere safe and stepping away from it.
Maybe outside the door,
In your closet,
Or in the drawer of your nightstand.
Take a slow breath in,
And as you exhale,
Feel the space that has been created within you by setting down those moments.
Bring one hand to your heart and then place the other on top of it,
If that feels comfortable to you.
Notice the steady rhythm.
This heart has carried you through the day,
Through stress,
Through urgency,
Through moments that required more of you than you really had to give.
Now it is time to let it slow down and rest.
You are allowed to rest.
You are allowed to release what was never yours to carry alone.
You are part of a team.
You are allowed to be cared for,
Even if just by this quiet moment.
If anything still feels heavy,
An interaction,
A worry,
A lingering thought,
Gently imagine placing it onto a leaf floating on the water in a peaceful stream flowing gently through a moonlit forest.
Watch as it drifts slowly away,
Carried by the calm current.
Keep watching it until you can't see it anymore.
You don't need to follow it.
You don't have to solve anything tonight.
Just let it move away from you,
And softly say to yourself,
I did what I could today.
I gave what I had,
And that is enough.
Let those words settle into the space you created by setting away the moments of the day.
Imagine it filling all that space,
Maybe through a calming light or a feeling of warmth spreading through you,
Starting at the top of your head and moving down across your face,
Your shoulders,
Your chest,
Into your arms and hands,
Flowing down through your torso,
Your hips,
Your legs,
And all the way to your feet.
With each breath,
Feel yourself becoming heavier,
More supported,
More at ease,
Breathing in rest.
There is nowhere you need to be tonight,
But in this moment.
There is nothing you need to do,
But relax,
Rest,
And breathe.
As you prepare for sleep,
You might gently ask yourself,
How do I want to feel as I rest tonight?
Maybe the answer is peaceful,
Safe,
Calm,
Or restored.
Choose one word that suits you and let it settle softly in your mind.
With each inhale,
Invite that feeling in.
With each exhale,
Let your body sink deeper into rest.
Take one final,
Slow,
Deep breath in,
And release it with an audible sigh or yawn.
You are allowed to let go of today.
Release it fully,
Knowing you will begin tomorrow rested,
Renewed,
And enough,
Just as you were today.
You are compassion personified,
And you care for others with your whole heart.
Tonight,
It's okay to care for yourself.
If you're ready for sleep,
Allow it to settle over you like a soft blanket.
If not,
Just remain here and rest,
Feeling proud knowing you've done enough for today.
