Plants are our guardians, our collaborators, our friends. But how well do we really know kin? Did you know that in addition to the same five senses humans have, plants have another 15 senses? In this 6-part series, Tigrilla Gardenia, with music by Spider plant, helps you sense the world like a plant, and in the process, expand your own senses. This course can be done with any plant, indoors or out. Even better, try it several times with different plants. Explore Plant Sound.

Hello and welcome to the fifth part of our Expand Your Senses with Plant Music series.

Spiderplant and I,

Tiggerida Cardenas,

Will guide you through this practice.

And we start by inviting you to find a plant of your choosing to help you through this journey.

This time,

It would be best to choose a flowering one,

At least for the first time you do this practice,

As petals seem to be the most responsive to sound.

Make sure you have writing and color materials close by to capture what comes to you at the end.

As you already know,

We will be using the pronouns key for singular and kin for plural to refer to plant persons during this practice.

It has been found that plants can hear the sound of running water.

Kin also make kin selves more attractive by opening flowers when kin hear pollinators approaching.

There is even a study that shows that when plants hear the sound of a caterpillar eating a leaf in the vicinity of kin's own body,

Defense chemicals are sent to the leaves closest to the sound.

So let's get ready to embark on this journey with kin.

With your breath,

Bring the music into focus.

Sit comfortably with the plant you will be working with and slowly close your eyes.

Start to breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth.

Deep and slow.

Breathing in through your mouth.

By breathing in,

You bring in new energy and when you breathe out,

You let go of what may keep you from being fully present here and now.

Now bring your attention to your physical body.

Continue breathing deep and slow as you scan your body and adjust whatever it is you need to relax your body from head to toe.

You now release your breathing.

Let it go back to its natural rhythm,

Breathing in and out through your nose.

Connect with your center wherever you feel that is in your body and from this place of peace,

Kindly ask the plant you chose or that chose you to guide you through the experience of plant hearing.

Open yourself so the plant may start sharing with you Ki's way of hearing.

Let Ki guide you as your own hearing adjusts to match the plant.

Hearing is a little different for plants.

Give yourself space to receive these vibrations.

Now we invite you to a gentle experience.

Speak a word or tone of vowel with the intention of being heard by the plant.

Take your time.

You can do it now.

You can be sure that Ki heard you,

But plants have no ears,

So how did Ki do it?

Ask the plant what it sounded like.

Enter into the plant in order to understand through plant senses what your word or tone sounded like to Ki.

Is there anything else Ki would like to share with you about the way plants hear?

Let the plant tell you.

Now take a deep breath and prepare yourself to end this experience.

There is no rush as you allow yourself to integrate everything you received so that you can recall it later.

Still with your eyes closed,

Send your gratitude to the plant who has worked with you this time so openly and generously,

Receiving any last messages the plant wants to share.

When you feel ready,

Slowly open your eyes.

Take paper and pen and capture everything that has come to you during this practice.

Let it flow from you directly to the paper with no filters.

Use designs and colors if human words won't capture the experience.

You'll have the chance to analyze it later with the help of your true nature who can interpret the plant languages used.

Thank you for your presence and we'll meet again soon for the sixth part of Expand Your Senses with Plant Music.

Next up,

Beyond the Human Senses.
