Plants are our guardians, our collaborators, our friends. But how well do we really know kin? Did you know that in addition to the same five senses humans have, plants have another 15 senses? In this 6-part series, Tigrilla Gardenia, with music by Spider plant, helps you sense the world like a plant, and in the process, expand your own senses. This course can be done with any plant, indoors or out. Even better, try it several times with different plants. Explore Plant Vision.

Transcript

Welcome to our six-part series on expanding your senses with plant music.

Spiderplant and I,

Tigreila Gardenia,

Are delighted to guide you on this journey.

Before we start,

Find a plant of your choosing to be your guide throughout this journey.

It can be a houseplant or an outdoor plant.

The choice is between you and the plant.

And make sure you have writing and coloring materials close by to capture what comes to you at the end.

Plants use a variety of languages to communicate,

Including images,

Smells,

And sensations.

Capture everything as it arrives.

The messages will become clear over time.

Throughout this series,

You will hear me use ki and kin in reference to plant people,

Including kiself and kinself.

These are plant pronouns and replace it,

He,

She,

They,

Them,

To help us recognize plants as individuals different from human people.

Ki is singular and kin is plural.

During this first practice,

We will connect with plant vision.

Sight is defined as the physical sense by which the light received by our eyes is interpreted by the brain and constructed into a representation of the objects in space.

Plants don't have brains,

But they do take in light as part of photosynthesis.

So in kin's own way,

Kin see.

Let's begin our journey.

I invite you to sit comfortably close to the plant you will be working with and shift your focus to the music.

The music is being composed by spider plant specifically to make it easier for you to connect with plants.

Now slowly close your eyes.

Start to breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth.

Deep and slow.

When you breathe in,

You bring in new energy.

And when you breathe out,

You let go of what may keep you from being fully present here and now.

Now bring attention to every little part of your physical body.

Keep breathing deep and slow.

Adjust what you need and relax your body from head to toe.

Now release your breathing.

Let it go back to its natural rhythm,

Breathing in and out through your nose.

Gently connect with your center now,

Wherever you feel that it's in your body.

Breathe in through your center and from this place of tranquility,

Ask the plant you chose,

Or that chose you,

To become one with a leaf.

So Key can guide you through this journey of discovery on how plants use the sense of vision.

You start feeling this deep sensation of connection with the plant world.

You feel the leaf you chose to associate with as part of yourself.

The texture,

The color,

The smell.

You're opening up this connection and are ready to communicate with this plant.

And Key is ready to work with you.

This leaf is covered in tiny plant cells that receive the sunlight.

And each of these cells is prepared by nature to store the energy of the sun.

This is a very important part of photosynthesis.

Now let the plant show you how Key sees the world.

Enter through the leaf and let the plant guide you through Key's subtle perception of everything around.

What do you see?

Is the light too bright or is it dark?

Can you distinguish color?

Can you define shapes around you?

Plant vision is very different from human vision.

So allow yourself to flow into this new definition of sight.

By being one leaf,

You allow the plant to reveal to you Key's fascinating mechanisms.

Stay with Key a little more and let the plant give you the last bits of information about how to relate to the planet through vision.

Slowly bring your conscious attention back to your breath.

Breathe in and out.

Deep and slow.

Let yourself welcome this experience into your body,

Allowing any messages to be integrated so that you can recall them later.

Before you go,

Still with your eyes closed,

Send your gratitude to the plant who has worked with you this time so openly and graciously.

Take your time receiving any last messages the plant wants to share.

When you feel ready,

Slowly open your eyes.

Take paper and pen and capture everything that has come to you during this practice.

Let it flow from you directly to the paper with no filter.

You'll have the chance to analyze it later with the help of your true nature,

Who can interpret the plant languages being used.

Thank you for your presence,

And we'll meet again soon for the second part of the Expand Your Senses with Plant Music series.

Next up,

Plant Touch.

It was wonderful connecting with a banana pup through this meditation. It helped me see and feel things differently and feel more connected with myself and with nature.
