Keep an easy exit by returning to slow breathing and ordinary sitting, and work with an experienced teacher or a clinician if a trauma, anxiety, pelvic, or cardiovascular history is involved. These steps come from practice tradition and physiological reasoning, not safety studies, so treat them as suggestive rather than confirmed, and remember the practice is not a treatment or a replacement for medical or psychological care.
The main difference is what you do with the energy. Semen-retention and NoFap communities focus on abstaining from ejaculation as a rule, whereas Jing Cultivation is a Taoist practice that actively refines and circulates sexual energy upward through breath, attention, and gentle pelvic engagement. Neither has clinical evidence confirming vitality, sexual, or mental-health benefits.

The difference is one of intention, not measured outcome. Kegel exercises train the pelvic-floor muscles, the sling of muscle supporting the bladder and bowel, as a purely physical routine; the Microcosmic Orbit, the circulation pathway up the spine and down the front of the body, guides attention and breath without cultivating arousal. Jing Cultivation borrows both the muscular engagement and that pathway but uniquely builds and then settles sexual arousal, drawing the felt charge upward within Taoist jing-qi-shen thinking. These are descriptive distinctions from tradition and practitioner report, not head-to-head findings, since no studies have directly compared the three.
