Take a moment to settle into a comfortable position.
Allow your body to become still,
And if it feels comfortable,
Gently close your eyes.
Take a slow breath in.
And slowly breathe out.
Again,
Breathing in.
And breathing out.
You don't need to do anything right now.
There is nowhere you need to be.
Nothing you need to solve.
For these next few minutes,
Simply allow yourself to be here.
Perhaps life feels a little heavy at the moment.
Perhaps there is something you're waiting for.
Something you're hoping will happen.
Something that hasn't worked out quite the way you imagined.
Or perhaps life is actually going quite well,
But there is still something you can't quite see clearly.
A decision you haven't made.
A door that hasn't opened.
Future you can't quite picture.
Sometimes the hardest part isn't that something has gone wrong.
Sometimes it's simply that we don't know what comes next.
And when we don't know what comes next,
Our minds can try desperately to fill in the blanks.
We imagine every possible outcome.
We worry.
We try to control things that aren't within our control.
We look for certainty.
We want to know that everything will be okay before we allow ourselves to relax.
But what if,
For a few moments,
You didn't need to know?
What if you could simply allow yourself to be where you are without needing to see the entire road ahead?
I'd like to tell you a story,
A story that begins more than 2,
With a man named Zeno.
Zeno lived in the ancient world.
He was a merchant,
And according to the ancient accounts,
He was a successful and wealthy one.
He had a life.
He had plans.
He had a future that he could probably imagine quite clearly.
And then.
.
.
His ship was wrecked.
In one terrible event,
Zeno lost his fortune.
The life he had been building was suddenly gone.
Imagine that for a moment.
The plans you thought you could rely upon.
Disappearing.
The future you had imagined,
No longer available to you.
The certainty of what came next,
Gone.
And yet,
Something extraordinary happened.
Zeno traveled to Athens,
And there he encountered philosophy.
He began studying under different teachers.
He became deeply interested in the question of how a human being could live a good life.
Even when life itself was beyond their control.
And eventually,
Zeno began teaching his own philosophy.
He taught in a place known as the Painted Store.
And from that place came the name we know today,
Stoicism.
Think about that for a moment.
The man who would become the founder of Stoicism began this extraordinary chapter of his life after losing the future he had expected to have.
And when he was standing in the middle of that loss,
He couldn't possibly have known what was coming.
He couldn't have known that his ideas would influence people for more than 2,
000 years.
He couldn't have known that people in the modern world would still be reading his story,
Still studying the philosophy he began,
Still finding comfort in the ideas that grew from that moment.
He only knew what he had lost.
He could not yet see what he would gain.
And perhaps there is something in that for you.
Not because your life needs to be compared with Zeno's.
Not because everything difficult that happens to us is secretly a gift.
And not because you need to convince yourself that whatever you're experiencing right now is happening for a reason.
You don't need to do any of that.
You don't have to call something painful a blessing.
You don't have to be grateful for something that hurts.
You don't have to understand why you're here.
There is simply another possibility.
You may not know the whole story yet.
Perhaps something in your life hasn't happened yet.
Perhaps something you wanted hasn't worked out.
Perhaps you're waiting for the right opportunity,
The right relationship,
The right home.
The right decision.
The right moment.
Perhaps you've been working towards something for a very long time,
And you're beginning to wonder whether it's ever going to happen.
Or perhaps you are simply in a season of life where you don't quite know what comes next.
And that's okay.
You don't have to know.
One of the central ideas in Stoic philosophy is that there are things within our control and things outside our control.
We cannot control every event.
We cannot control other people's choices.
We cannot control the past.
We cannot control exactly how the future unfolds.
But we can choose how we meet this moment.
We can choose where we place our attention.
We can choose the next step.
So for a moment,
Bring to mind whatever feels uncertain in your life right now.
You don't need to choose the biggest thing.
Perhaps it's something small.
Perhaps it's something you've been thinking about recently.
Simply notice it.
And notice how your mind responds to uncertainty.
Does it try to solve everything?
Does it jump ahead?
Does it imagine what could go wrong?
Does it demand an answer?
And now,
Without trying to change anything,
Take a slow breath and say quietly to yourself,
I don't have to know yet.
Again,
I don't have to know yet.
And perhaps.
.
.
I can meet today without knowing what tomorrow will bring.
You don't need to see the whole path.
You don't need a map of the next 10 years.
You don't even need to know what the next chapter will look like.
You only need to take the next step that is yours to take.
Imagine yourself standing at the edge of a path.
You can see only a short distance ahead.
Beyond that,
The path disappears into the mist.
You cannot see where it leads,
And perhaps part of you wishes you could.
Perhaps you'd like a guarantee,
A sign,
A promise that everything will work out exactly as you hoped.
But there is no such promise.
And yet.
.
.
You are still here.
The path is still in front of you.
And you can take one step.
Another.
And another.
You don't have to know where the path ends.
You only need to be willing to discover what lies beyond the parts you can currently see.
Remember Zeno.
Remember that when his merchant ship was lost,
He could not see the life that was waiting for him.
He couldn't see the philosophy he would create.
He couldn't see the people he would influence.
He couldn't see the thousands of years of history that would follow.
He never could have imagined anything like that.
All he could see was what had been lost.
And yet.
.
.
His story was not over.
Perhaps yours isn't either.
Maybe you're standing at the end of something.
Or perhaps you're standing in the middle of something.
Perhaps you're waiting for something to change.
Perhaps you're wondering whether a future you haven't imagined yet could ever feel as meaningful as the future you once imagined.
You don't have to answer that question today.
Just leave the door open.
Open to the possibility that life may surprise you.
Open to the possibility that something you cannot currently see may eventually become visible.
Open to the possibility that there are chapters of your life you haven't even imagined yet.
You don't have to believe that everything happens for a reason.
You don't have to believe that everything will happen exactly as you want.
You only have to remember this.
You cannot see the whole story from where you are standing today.
And sometimes,
That is where hope begins.
Not with certainty.
Not with knowing.
But with the simple possibility that there is more.
So take another slow breath in.
And breathe out.
Feel the ground beneath you.
Feel the support beneath your body.
Come back to this moment.
This is the only moment you need to live right now.
You don't need to solve tomorrow.
You don't need to understand yesterday.
You can simply meet today.
And take the next step.
And when life feels heavy,
When you find yourself looking at the future and seeing only uncertainty.
Remember Zeno.
Remember the man who could not see what was coming next.
Remember that the loss of one future became the beginning of another.
And remind yourself.
I don't need to see the whole path.
I only need to take the next step.
And perhaps most importantly.
.
.
The story isn't over yet.
Take one final slow breath in.
And gently breathe out.
When you're ready,
Allow your eyes to open.
And carry this thought with you.
You may not know what comes next.
You don't have to.
There are still chapters you haven't read.
Paths you haven't walked.
Possibilities you haven't imagined.
And for today.
That couldn't be enough.
The story isn't over yet.
Maybe a new one is just beginning.
You you ooooooooooo
