A Simple Practice For Enlightenment

Pema Chödrön writes that enlightenment is "not being swayed by external circumstances as a total experience." Let's practice experiencing the external circumstances without letting them dominate your experience with a simple breathing and tactile exercise.

Hi,

This is Morgan at Splendid.

Yoga.

So,

Enlightenment is defined as not being swayed by external circumstances as a total experience.

Enlightenment is not being swayed by external circumstances as a total experience.

And the small example is like being stuck in traffic where you're just where you are,

You really can't do anything about it,

And you're part of the problem,

Right?

You're traffic too.

You're preventing everyone else from getting where they need to be.

And you let that build inside of you as something that you don't want instead of it accepting it as what is.

There is no peace in that.

There is no enlightenment in wanting things to be different than how they are.

That's why you have to start where you are.

As Pema Chodron writes,

We've discussed a number of methods to do that.

Today let's come back to your breath.

Sit comfortably.

Place your hands on your belly,

Any part,

Anywhere the hands can comfortably reach.

You could even cross your arms over your belly if that's easier.

And take a big inhale right into your hands.

Even let it go and squeeze everything out.

That last little puff.

Inhale in again right into your hands.

And exhale out.

Squeeze it out.

Now relax your arms.

Notice where your fingertips landed.

Feel what's underneath your fingertips.

Without moving them,

Without exploring,

Just notice the external experience of what your fingertips are touching.

Do you want them to be touching something different?

Or are they okay just where they are?

Can you give yourself that choice?

Can you allow it to be okay for your fingertips to be touching what they're touching?

Without needing to be feeling anything different.

That's enlightenment.

You feel what you feel.

You notice it.

Without deciding if you like it or if you don't like it.

But you notice that too if the judgment does come up.

If you want something to feel softer or scratchier or harder or a different color.

I don't know if you can feel colors.

You're just allowing it to be.

That's bliss.

That's enlightenment.

That's samadhi.
