The Riparian - A Poem & Inquiry For Sitting With The Unknown

Riparian zones are the fertile, in-between places where land meets water. We, too, live between worlds ... form and formlessness, knowing and not-knowing. The moment we believe we know for certain what life is or who we are, we close off a deeply fertile way of living. This poem is a reminder that the discomfort of uncertainty is often the most fertile place to exist. And if we are open to Inquiry, how that openness can take just one seed of truth and change our lives irrecoverably. The riparian. Friend. Why do you sew the wound close? Look at the rocks by the sea. How the tide pulls, Again and again, In the same open seam of stone. That narrow stitch is where the water remains between tides. It is a small mouth where the moon draws its quiet, Silver tongue through the pool. Inside the break, A limpid licks the mineral lip of the ledge. Small shining creatures eat the salt of the world and call it home. Do not turn away. In that opening like parted earth, One honest question can fall in. Listen to how it plinks into the deep of your being and begins its slow work. Right now you are a knot of known things, Tied by a hurried hand. Let mystery's fingers find the string. Because you will find more life in the raw and fecund in-betweens than in the stiff, Starch-white knowledge that keeps your sleeves from touching the world. The body knows this place where the unknown keeps entering. And you keep making room for it. A question. Where in my body right now is there a seam that hasn't been sewn shut? And what happens. If I let my breath pool there again and again, The way the tide does, Without trying to close it,
