Beloved.
There is an understanding at the heart of freedom that cannot be borrowed from another.
It cannot be believed into existence.
Or collected.
As another beautiful idea.
It has to be felt.
It's not about becoming someone new.
But about discovering where you have always been standing.
So rather than thinking about it.
Let us come to it gently.
Through the body.
Through imagination.
Through something as ordinary as a seed.
Close your eyes now,
And find your gravity.
Feel the places where this body meets the chair.
The floor.
The air.
And just rest here.
Attentive,
Open and curious.
Imagine a meadow full of wildflowers.
It's a warm summer evening.
Honeyed light stretches across the field.
Catching the tiny wings of insects drifting between the blossoms.
A breeze moves through the grass,
Like a hand smoothing the fur of some velvety sleeping animal.
Suddenly the wind gathers.
Flower heads bow and seeds loosen.
Thousands lift into the air,
Each one caught by something invisible.
Let us follow just one.
It doesn't matter where the seed came from.
Just watch it riding the wind,
Turning,
Floating,
Falling.
No map,
No destination,
No one steering it home.
Wind begins to soften,
And the sea drifts lower until it comes to rest upon a patch of bare earth.
Feel this in your own body,
The way something inside you settles.
When a long-held breath is finally released.
Rain arrives.
The earth softens.
The seed disappears beneath the quiet and patient soil.
Roots begin to reach into the darkness,
Finding moisture,
The way your own hands might search along a wall in the night.
To somehow discover a door.
The earth warms.
Without being told,
Something within the seed turns toward the light.
It rises.
Not because it decided to,
Or because it believed in itself,
But Because life knows how to become life.
The ground supports,
The rain nourishes,
The sun calls it upward.
The wind strengthens it,
And everything belongs.
Eventually the flower stands among the others,
Swaying,
Unhurried.
Its own seeds already loosening at the touch of wind.
The passing body of a bee,
The gentle hand of a child.
And the dance begins again.
At no point was the seed separate from the world around it.
It could not refuse the rain or command the winds.
It did not decide when to root.
Or when to bloom.
The earth simply held it.
Gravity drew it.
The sun pulled it upward.
Every movement belonged to the whole.
Even the atoms that became petal and stem were forged inside ancient stars.
Long before there was a meadow ready to receive it.
The flower never became itself alone.
It was always becoming alongside everything else.
Feel the flower standing in the meadow.
Notice there is no effort in its bloom,
Nothing being managed,
Nothing being controlled.
Life is simply expressing and being itself.
Just as the seed never wondered whether it was doing enough to become a flower,
Perhaps you too can rest for a moment from the effort of becoming.
And feel that quiet intelligence within you,
Staying with what is here,
Knowing more than what the mind is currently telling you.
Gently leave the meadow and return to this body,
To the simple experience of hearing these words.
Can keep your eyes closed.
Can you find the one?
Who is hearing these words?
Not the thought.
That says me.
The one solid and separate.
Entity itself.
Look carefully.
What do you actually find?
Every time we inquire into this,
We touch on what emptiness actually feels like.
As a lived experience.
As a mysterious,
Unanswerable question.
Thought gives names to everything.
It names the flower,
The rain,
The wind,
The feelings moving through this body,
And the person we call me.
There is nothing wrong with this.
Naming is part of being human.
But before the naming.
Life is already here.
Before the word fear or loneliness or heartache.
There is simply sensation.
Before the word grief,
There is simply a movement in the body.
Before the thought,
I am separate.
There is only this borderless sense of being.
It is thought that convinces us there is someone here who must control life,
Carry life and somehow hold everything together.
But notice even now.
The breath is arriving without effort.
The heart is beating without instruction.
Sounds are appearing without being managed,
And you are here,
Safe,
Whole.
Without following the next thought.
Life is already living itself.
When fear or uncertainty arrives,
We can return here.
To the meadow of our own being.
Not to the story first,
But to the body,
To the feet on the earth.
To the breath moving through us,
To the quiet intelligence that grows,
Flowers,
Turns seeds towards the sun.
And moves through every living thing.
The seed never had to carry the becoming of the flower.
It simply remained in relationship with the wind,
The soil,
The rain,
The light.
And perhaps you are being grown in exactly the same way.
You do not have to carry life.
Because life has always been carrying you.
