
Sun Sitting

It is common practice to meditate inside; we often have a special seat or space to practice. But sitting outside offers a chance to focus the awareness on observing the environment. Outside offers many sensations to observe, so a seated practice outside observing the activity can bring us to a quieter space inside of ourselves

Begin by finding a sunny spot.
Find a place that is comfortable,
Where sun exposure is okay for a longer period of time.
If it's especially sunny,
The sun is especially powerful,
Especially hot,
Maybe you want to find a mix of shade and sun.
And then make sure you're seated comfortably,
Wherever you're seated,
Be it a chair,
A cushion,
A bench in a park.
Make sure your spot is comfortable and you feel solid,
Stable,
And well supported.
Make any adjustments you need to.
And then find stillness in the body and bring attention to your body.
Notice how you're feeling in this moment.
Is there tiredness?
Is there any aches?
Is there any areas of tension?
You can take this time to make yourself more comfortable.
So if that's small adjustments in the posture,
Or maybe that's just breathing into areas of tightness and tension.
Ensure the body is prepared for our practice so as not to distract our minds.
And once the body is relaxed,
Begin to expand your attention outwards,
Noticing the environment you're in and notice the sensations of the sun on your body.
Notice the temperature,
Whether your body is in direct sunlight or it's just the radiation.
Notice any tingling,
Pressure,
Any sensations.
Be present to whatever you're feeling in this moment.
Just observe.
Your breath is smooth and natural.
