Hi friends,
Let's talk about what do we do when we're at work and things are really busy and we just need to have a little break.
Even if we don't have time to do one.
There's a few techniques we can use here,
And we'll edit it depending on if we're by ourselves or with other people.
The easiest is,
Of course,
If we're by ourselves.
If we have a little time,
It starts with just stopping.
Just stopping.
If I'm at my desk,
Maybe I push myself away from my desk.
Take a break.
And then we take a deep breath.
We can take it as deep as we want.
We can take as many as we want.
It calms down the nervous system.
And then we move from just reacting into some sort of more skillful response.
Perhaps if I'm activated,
I might say a few things to myself.
I might say,
I'm okay.
I'm safe.
I'm good.
Whatever it is.
And then.
.
.
The next level is to ask myself,
With intention,
Okay,
Who do I want to be right now?
How do I want to show up to this meeting?
The answer is usually something like,
Oh,
I want to be present.
I want to be at my best.
What do we do if we're with other people?
We're on a Zoom call.
We're with a bunch of other people,
Maybe in person at the office.
All the same things apply,
We're just a little bit more subtle about it.
So it first starts with this recognition.
It's like,
Oh,
Whatever path I've been taking,
Whether I'm distracted with my phone,
Whether I'm starting to get activated.
I just stopped.
And maybe instead of hand on heart,
Maybe I could,
You know,
Pat my thigh or just be present.
And I start the inner dialogue.
It can be quick.
It could be a simple statement like,
I'm okay,
I'm okay.
And then we move to Intentionally.
Who do I want to be right now?
We could ask ourselves the question,
What would my best self do?
What would love do?
We're just moving.
It's just the simple jujitsu move from reacting to life,
Like a hamster on a wheel is reacting to life,
And that causes stress and strain.
To having some space and having some intentionality.
There's another technique I like,
Much more structural.
Which is.
When do you end your meetings?
In the past,
I would have 36,
38 hours worth of meetings every week.
And if I ended every one of them at the end of the hour and started another one,
I'm just running,
Running,
Running.
So I would try to.
Still try to,
And every meeting at 5 tell.
You can even tell people you're with,
Hey,
I need to go at 5 till the hour.
So instead of ending at 3,
I end at 2.
55.
Instead of 2.
30,
It's 2.
25 or 2.
27.
And that little break gives you a break.
Then you can do what you need to do.
Use the restroom,
Get a drink,
Go outside,
Touch grass,
Get some sunshine,
Have a breath,
Whatever.
And then it's that,
Again,
Intentionality.
When I enter the next Zoom call,
The next meeting,
I can ask myself,
How do I want to show up?
Who do I want to be in this meeting?
The same techniques apply if you don't have control of your calendar,
If you're with a bunch of people.
It's just more subtle.
It's that inner stopping.
Pausing.
Thinking,
Then asking myself,
Who do I want to be?
How do I want to show up?
Each one of those gives us just a little bit of movement towards and having a skillful response.
So,
Best of luck on your journey.
Enjoy every second of it,
And we'll see you next time.
Take care.
Bye bye.
