Sound Bath Sessions 064: Minnie Cheung
‘It cleared my mind too.’ Minnie said to me afterwards as we walked out of the park. We decided to record in Shatin Park near where she was staying. It was quiet that afternoon with very few people wandering about. There was a small pagoda on top of a hill we saw and walked to it to find a man resting inside. Lucky him! We setup and after a short warm up Minnie began her session. She had only 4 bowls and a few other objects, so it was going to be a simple session. Long drones rang out as she repeated melodic chants in tongues, voicing the inspiration she gets from her own playing. She used some tuning forks and shaker during the performance which were used perfectly. I felt that this was a well-balanced recording being focused and a part of the surroundings at the same time, vulnerable to the outside world. The gardener, the traffic rumble, the nature, the baby, the bowls, all give the session presence of place and life.
