Sound Bath Sessions 192: Naoko Kawachi
I flew to Tokyo from Kagoshima, where I would stay for the next three days. My first recording was with Naoko in the Otomesando area at around 6 am. Her space was in a residential area, and people were still sleeping as the sun just started to light up the sky. I thought it would be interesting to explore the idea of 'awakening' as a concept for the sessions- both in what was played and what was heard in the surrounding area. This track used all the bowls for a more balanced recording; the lower, weighty notes help give a fuller sound. Extended drones numb the brain as you still dream of sleep. The last 5 minutes are so moving as she repeats the same slow and gentle phrases over and over until it finally ends. Such a beautiful piece.
