A Boundaries Practice For Catching Yourself Before Yes
by Guy Ferdman
There is a specific moment worth catching, the half second between someone asking something of you and your mouth already forming yes, often before you have had any real chance to check in with what you actually want. This practice works right in that gap, using the feel of your feet against the ground and a slow, extended exhale to slow that half second down just enough for a real choice to fit inside it. Nothing about this requires you to have the perfect boundary language ready, it is simply training your body to notice the gap exists at all, since most automatic yeses skip past it entirely. Come back to this before a conversation where you can already feel the old pattern gearing up, a request from family, a favor at work, anything that tends to get an instant agreement before you have thought it through. A boundaries practice centered on noticing the pause, not performing it perfectly.
