First Step Prayer- Powerlessness Is Strength

Join me for a First Step prayer based on the tradition of Twelve Step Spirituality. This prayer is for anyone of any faith tradition (or none) who has come to the place of admitting that they cannot control their difficulties with their own finite ego, power, or control. It is for anyone who wants to know that admitting powerlessness is the gateway to strength and liberation.

Higher Power,

As I understand you,

In this sacred moment,

I humbly admit my powerlessness over the substances,

Behaviors,

Emotions,

And thought patterns that have ensnared me.

I acknowledge that my use of and my attempts to control these aspects of my life have led to chaos and despair,

Rendering my life unmanageable.

Today I acknowledge the futility of my attempts to control and the folly of my belief that I can manage these issues with my own mind and strength.

Help me to understand the true meaning of powerlessness,

Not as weakness,

But as a gateway to strength and liberation.

Grant me the humility to accept that I cannot manage these difficulties with my own limited power,

Resources,

Or control.

Guide me daily to let go of my resistance and denial and to embrace the reality of my situation with courage and honesty.

As I walk through this gateway of honesty and admission of my powerlessness,

I now open myself to the freedom,

Strength,

And joy that comes from releasing the burden of trying to manage and control what I cannot.

With a humble and grateful heart,

I embrace this newfound freedom and stand ready to walk the journey ahead,

Guided by your wisdom and grace.
