Why Morning Anxiety Hits & How to Recenter
by Oana Dragan
Have you ever woken up and immediately felt doubt, heaviness, or anxiety about your life or decisions? In this video, I talk about why that can happen — including your body’s natural cortisol awakening response and how, during times of stress or uncertainty, your mind can become more sensitive to fear and “what if” thinking first thing in the morning. We’ll also gently explore the difference between anxious morning thoughts and intuition, and why they can feel so similar when you’re still waking up. I’ll guide you through a few simple grounding practices to help you come back to yourself, so you’re not making meaning out of fear before your clarity has had a chance to return.

Hi friend!
I'm Juana and thank you for taking the time to be here.
Some of you may already be familiar with my audio meditations and for those of you who are,
It's nice to continue this journey on video as well.
For those of you new to me,
Hi,
Welcome.
Today I want to talk to you about something that happens to all of us in the first few minutes after we wake up and it can feel kind of unsettling if you don't know what the heck is happening.
So when you wake up,
Your body releases a spike of cortisol,
A stress hormone.
It's meant to energize you and get you up and at it.
But here's the catch.
If you're processing a big life decision,
That cortisol grabs the first open tab in your mind.
It could be around your partner,
The kids,
Money or safety.
So even before coffee,
Your nervous system is scanning,
Did I make a mistake?
Am I safe?
What if I ruin everything?
Does that sound a little bit familiar?
The good news is it's not your intuition,
Not your higher mind.
It's just your body trying to anchor itself to something familiar.
This is biology,
Not wisdom.
And here's why morning anxiety often targets the big stuff.
Your brain dislikes uncertainty more than discomfort.
For example,
Maybe you made a decision yesterday about work,
A relationship or something important to you.
You were so fired up and sure about this decision and by the AM,
Your mind already starts doubting and second guessing it.
Even if your daytime clarity says this choice is right for me,
Your cortisol charged morning brain whispers,
But at least the old option or path is familiar.
We could survive that.
Let's play small and safe.
Well,
That's your inner survival manager trying to regain control while your more conscious self is still waking up.
That's why it's so important to not take your thoughts so seriously.
Now here's a simple routine you can try when morning dread hits.
It only takes a few minutes and makes a big difference.
Step one,
Do not fight it,
Name it.
Whisper to yourself,
Ah,
Hello cortisol.
You're just trying to make me safe again.
Thanks,
But I've got this.
It's that simple.
Acknowledgement assures your body there's no immediate emergency.
Step two,
Ground before thought,
Sit up,
Feet on the floor,
Take a slow breath in for four and out for six.
Feel the bed under you,
The light in the room,
Maybe something in your hands.
Let sensation come first before the story in your head starts spinning.
Step three,
Anchor in a truth you already know.
Repeat something grounded that your higher mind already agrees with,
Like morning thoughts are temporary,
My truth is constant,
Or I trust my guidance.
This uncertainty is temporary.
And if you can move a little stretch,
Sway,
Step into the sunlight,
Even two minutes breaks the cortisol loop and reminds your body we're in action,
Not in threat.
Finally,
Promise yourself,
Do not grapple with big decisions immediately upon waking.
Let morning fear be background noise,
Not a signal to reanalyze your whole life direction.
So here's the reframe.
Morning anxiety isn't your intuition doubting you.
It's your body waking faster than your higher mind.
It feels shaky at first,
But it's completely normal and temporary.
Once your system stabilize,
Your wisdom is right back in the driver's seat.
Oh,
If you need some help with this,
I have a lot of great morning practices to help you.
Many for free.
So do check them out.
I look forward to connecting again soon.
And this is Gandalf,
By the way.
He's my little fur wizard,
And he's always helping me with my meditations.
He'll sort of sit there while I edit or create them and record them.
Hi,
Gandalf.
Do you want to say hi to everyone?
Yeah?
