Welcome.
I'm truly glad that you're here.
This is week five of six for the series when being strong becomes too much.
Today we're turning towards strength itself,
Not the kind that comes from pushing or bracing.
For the kind that includes choice.
This isn't about giving up your strength and it isn't about becoming softer than feels true.
It's about noticing when strength is needed.
And when it might be okay to do less.
Because a strong nervous system is not one that is always calm.
And it is not one that is always activated.
A strong nervous system is one that has range.
It can rise when something is needed.
It can respond.
We can focus.
It can protect.
And then,
When the moment has passed,
It can return.
So today we're exploring strength as something that can move,
Something that can engage and release.
Something that can become responsive.
Rather than automatic.
As always,
Please take care of yourself in whatever way feels right.
You're welcome to shift,
Open your eyes,
Or rest at any point.
And if you fall asleep.
No worries.
Your body is listening.
Take a slow breath in.
And let it go.
Now,
Breathe deeply.
Release.
Completely.
Thank you for showing up for yourself and for this moment.
Take another deep breath in.
And release it completely.
Allowing yourself to arrive.
Allowing your shoulders to soften,
Your jaw to unclench.
Your breath to move at its own pace.
There's nothing you need to change right now.
Nothing to fix.
Nothing to perform.
Just you.
As you are.
Breathe deeply.
Release.
Complicated.
Begin by noticing the support beneath you.
Chair,
The floor,
The ground.
Something steady.
Holding you without effort.
Allow your body to rest into that support.
You don't need to hold yourself up right now.
Breathe deeply.
Release completely.
And as you begin to settle.
Notice that your body is already communicating.
Before thaw.
Before words.
Before you decide what you feel.
Your breath is communicating.
So are your muscles and your posture.
Your heart rhythm,
Your tension.
Your steadiness.
Your readiness.
All of these are ways the body reports what it has learned about the moment.
So today we're not trying to think our way into change.
We're listening from the body up.
Breathe deeply.
Release completely.
For many of us,
Strength became automatic.
Not something we consciously chose.
Not something we evaluated.
It became the way we moved through the world.
Strength as readiness.
Of competence.
As self-control.
Strength as,
I've got this.
I'll handle it.
I won't make this harder for anyone.
Breathe deeply.
Release completely.
You Notice what happens in your body when you hear the word strength.
Not what you think about.
About what your body does.
Does your posture shift?
Your chest lift?
Does something brace or become more alert?
Does something quietly prepare?
Just notice.
Breathe deeply.
Release completely.
And I'm wondering,
Does strength feel like something you chose?
Does it feel like something you choose each moment?
Or does it feel like something that happens before you even realize it?
A readiness you were always in.
Tightening.
A moving forward.
Preparing to respond.
Just notice.
Breathe deeply.
Release completely.
You don't need to change your response.
If your body holds firm,
Stay with that.
If it feels neutral,
You can stay with that too.
If something softens.
See if you can allow that.
And if something braces,
Allow that too.
Strength may have been admired.
Rewarded.
Expected.
It may have been the part of you that others relied on.
The capable one.
The Calm One.
A steady one.
The one who could keep functioning when others couldn't.
Stay with that identity.
Breathe deeply.
Release completely.
For some of us,
Strength was not only something we did.
It became a signal the body sent out.
I'm OK.
I can manage.
You can count on me.
I won't fall apart.
And over time,
The body may have learned to keep sending that signal.
Even when something inside needed something else.
Just notice if any of that feels familiar.
Breathe deeply.
Release completely.
When did strength become your default?
Was it during a time of uncertainty?
Responsibility.
Instability.
Was it when others needed you?
When there wasn't enough room for your own needs.
When staying steady felt safer than feeling what was happening.
You don't need a story.
You don't need a memory.
Just notice what your body does when you consider that strength may have once been protection.
Breathe deeply.
Release completely.
You might also ask,
What happens if I'm not strong in this moment?
Does something feel exposed?
Uncertain.
Less valuable.
Was safe.
To something in the body's saying.
No.
Stay ready.
Stay capable.
Stay in control.
Stay with whatever arises.
Breathe deep.
Release complete.
And as you stay,
See if you can notice whether your body is responding to this moment.
Or to many moments that came before this one.
No need to know.
Just notice.
Breathe deeply.
Release complete.
If you notice a part of you that resists this exploration.
Stay with it.
You might hear a voice that says,
Strength is who I am.
If I soften,
Things will fall apart.
People need me to be steady.
I don't have the luxury of doing less.
I can't afford to pause.
If I don't hold it.
Who will?
Allow those words to land in your body.
Notice the tone of that voice.
Is it protective?
Farm.
Urgent.
Is it trying to keep something from unraveling?
Breathe deep.
Released completely.
Where does that voice live physically?
In your chest.
Your jaw,
Your back.
Your shoulders,
Your belly,
Your hands.
Does it feel lifted or locked?
May be contained.
May be prepared.
Stay in that space for just a moment longer.
Breathe deeply.
Release completely.
This part may be part of your body's readiness system.
The system that mobilizes,
The system that says.
Act.
Prepare.
Respond.
Protect.
That system is not wrong.
It's essential.
It gives us energy and focus,
Courage and movement.
The problem is not that strength activates,
The problem is when it cannot.
Release.
When the body stays ready long after the moment.
Has passed.
When strength becomes a posture we live in.
Instead of a capacity we can access.
Stay with us.
Breathe deep.
Released completely.
There may have been times when being strong was not optional.
When others were depending on you.
When emotions needed containing them.
When chaos required steadiness.
Strength may have prevented things from unraveling.
It may have protected relationships or children.
It may have protected your own sense of stability.
It may have helped you keep moving when stopping didn't feel possible.
That strength was intelligent.
It was adaptive.
It did not arise randomly.
Breathe deep.
Release.
Comfort.
Allow your body to feel that validation.
If part of you feels pride in your strength.
Allow that to be here.
If part of you feels exhaustion.
Allow that to be here too.
Both can coexist.
Pride and fatigue.
Capability and cost.
Steadiness and longing.
Stay in this space just another moment longer.
Breathe deeply.
Release completely.
Your body did what it knew how to do with the information it had.
It chose the strategy that created the most safety.
The most stability,
The most possibility of getting through.
That is not weakness.
That is survival intelligence.
Breathe deeply.
Release completely.
What has it cost you to always be strong?
Not in a self-critical way,
Just honestly.
When strength became your default response,
What had to move to the background?
Has it cost you to rest?
Moments where you could fully exhale without monitoring what might happen next.
Has it cost you recovery?
The body's ability to come down after being on.
Has it cost you the feeling of knowing when the moment is over?
Breathe deeply.
Release completely.
As it costs you spontaneity.
The freedom to be unsure.
To change your mind.
To not know what to do.
As it costs you being held.
Not just physically.
But emotionally.
Has there been space in your life where someone could steady you?
Without you having to stay steady first.
Notice what happens in your body as you ask that.
Does your chest tighten?
Does your throat shift?
Maybe your shoulders lift in preparation.
Maybe something goes quite wrong.
Breathe deeply.
Release completely.
Has strength cost you vulnerability?
Moments where you could see.
I don't know.
I'm overwhelmed.
I need help.
I'm not okay yet.
What would it have meant to allow someone?
To see that.
Notice the body's response.
Stay right here.
For just a moment.
Breathe deep.
Release completely.
Strength can also cost relational intimacy.
If you are always the capable one.
Always the calm one.
Always the one who has it together.
Others may not know or truly understand when you are struggling.
And over time you may become unseen in your steadiness.
See if there is any sensation in your body when you consider that.
Breathe deeply.
Release.
Completely.
And may have cost you your own internal cues.
When strength is automatic,
You may override signals of fatigue.
Or sadness.
Confusion.
When strength is automatic.
You may override signals of fatigue.
Sadness.
Confusion.
Strength can say,
Keep going,
Stay focused,
Don't stop.
But the body may have been whispering something else.
Maybe I'm tired.
I need pause.
I need support.
I need time to recover.
Notice if there is even a small awareness of something you have pushed past in the name of strength.
Breathe deeply.
Release completely.
And perhaps one of the deepest costs.
Has strength ever made it difficult to receive care?
If you are always the strong one,
Who gets to be strong for you?
Allow that question to land slowly.
Not to create sorrow.
Just to allow awareness.
Stay right here.
For just a moment.
Breathe deeply.
Release completely.
If grief surfaces,
Even slightly,
That makes sense.
When something has protected you for a long time and also cost you something.
There can be complexity.
Pride and fatigue.
Capability and loneliness.
Competence and longing.
Activation.
And depletion.
You don't need to resolve that complexity.
Just allow it to exist.
Breathe deeply.
Release completely.
If nothing feels clear,
That's okay too.
Sometimes the cost shows up as subtle tension.
A persistent tightness,
A chronic readiness.
A breath that never fully releases.
A body that has forgotten how to return.
Just notice what your body knows.
Breathe deeply.
Release completely.
Now after staying with both the intelligence and the cost of your strength.
We are not asking you to abandon it.
We are not asking you to become softer than what feels safe.
We are simply exploring whether strength must always be automatic.
Take a moment and notice what automatic strength feels like in your body.
A readiness.
Of bracing.
A forward orientation.
A contained breath.
A subtle or not so subtle preparing.
The part that activates without asking permission.
This is a strength that moves quickly.
It protects,
Studies.
Response.
Stay with that sensation.
Breathe deeply.
Release completely.
Now imagine something slightly different.
Strength that pauses before engaging.
Strength that checks in.
Strength that asks.
Is this a moment that requires me to breathe?
Or is this a moment where I can stay awake?
Is this a moment for action?
Or can this moment be for recovery?
Is this a moment to hold?
For possibly a moment to receive.
Notice what happens in your body when you imagine that pause.
Does something resist?
Soften.
Feel unfamiliar.
Does it feel like the body needs proof?
Just notice.
Breathe deeply.
Release.
Completely.
Strength with choice does not mean doing less.
It means deciding.
It means there is a little more space between the signals.
And the response.
It means the body does not have to move into effort before knowing what is actually needed.
Breathe deep.
Release completely.
It means the difference between I must hold this.
And I am choosing to hold this.
See if you can feel the difference between those two statements in your body.
Say to yourself.
I must hold this.
Notice what your body does.
Now say.
I am choosing.
To hold them.
Notice if anything shifts in your body,
Even slightly.
Then stay with the contrast.
Breathe deeply.
Release completely.
Strength or choice also includes the option to not engage immediately.
You can gather information.
Feel your feet on the ground.
Allow your breath to deepen before responding.
Allow the body to report what is true,
Now.
Rather than only reacting from what was true before.
Notice if your body knows the sensation of delayed response.
Not avoidance.
Not withdrawal.
Just a moment of awareness before.
Activation.
Breathe deeply.
Release completely.
Now let's explore this gently.
If strength were flexible,
What would that allow?
Would it allow rest between efforts?
Would it allow asking without collapse?
Would it allow uncertainty without panic?
Would it allow alertness without bracing?
Would it allow care without losing capability?
Breathe deeply.
Release completely.
Notice if your body can imagine strength expanding and contracting.
Like a muscle that engages and then releases.
Not permanently released.
Just Responsive.
Engage.
Release.
Rise.
Return.
Action.
And recovery.
This is range.
Stay with that image.
Breathe deeply.
Release completely.
You might also explore.
If I soften by one degree,
Do I disappear?
Allow your body to answer that question,
Not your mind.
To softening equal loss.
Or does it create range?
Does less bracing mean less strength?
Or could it mean more access to yourself?
Stay with that response.
Breathe deeply.
Release completely.
Strength with choice does not remove your capability.
It adds discernment.
It does not remove your steadiness.
It adds flexibility.
Does not remove your identity.
It expands it.
Allow that to land.
It's lovely.
Breathe deeply.
Release completely.
See if you can find one small place in your body that is holding strength right now.
A muscle.
Maybe your posture.
A readiness in your body.
Your jaw may feel set.
There could be a firmness in your belly.
Or a holding of your breath.
Without forcing anything,
See if it can soften just a bit.
Not collapse.
Just salt.
Notice if anything shifts internally.
Does your breath.
Deep breath.
Does your stomach release slightly?
Does your body feel more available?
Or does something resist?
Breathe deeply.
Release completely.
If something resists,
That makes sense.
The body may not yet trust that softness is safe.
It may not yet know that it can soften and still respond when needed.
So we go slowly.
Just one breath.
Just one small signal.
I can remain capable without holding so tightly.
Breathe deeply.
Release completely.
For the rest of this practice allows strength to exist with your awareness.
You are not trying to reduce it.
You are not trying to prove you can do less.
You are simply noticing that you have options.
Breathe deeply.
Release completely.
If your body firms notice that.
If your body softens,
Notice that too.
There is no correct way,
No perfect balance.
Just awareness.
Just range.
Just the possibility that your system can move instead of staying fixed.
Breathe deeply.
Release completely.
Imagine yourself moving through a familiar situation in your life.
A place where strength usually activates quickly.
A conversation,
Responsibility,
A decision.
A moment where others may look to you.
See yourself there,
Not changing anything yet.
Just noticing the moment before activation.
That tiny space,
The breath,
The pause,
The option.
Breathe deeply.
Release completely.
You may still choose strength.
You may still step forward.
You may still respond.
But now there is a millisecond of choice.
And that is range.
That is more regulation and that is earned.
Allow your body to feel that possibility.
Breathe deeply.
Release completely.
Strength does not have to be relinquished to make room for flexibility.
They can coexist.
Firmness and softness.
Capability and receptivity.
Steadiness and openness.
Activation and recovery.
You are not dismantling your strength.
You are widening it.
Stay here for a few breaths.
Now breathe deeply.
And release completely.
If it feels true,
You might quietly say to yourself,
My strength does not have to work alone.
I can choose when to engage.
I can soften without losing who I am.
I can return with after effort.
I can be capable and still receive.
Notice what your body does when you say that.
Breathe deeply.
Release completely.
And for now,
That awareness is enough.
For the next five minutes,
We will sit in silence,
Allowing more of the experience to settle deeper into your body.
You don't need to hold on to anything or rehearse anything.
Just allow the body to feel what it can feel.
If strength shows up,
Let it be there.
Its softness shows up.
Let it be there too.
And if both show up together.
Allow them to both belong.
Breathe deep.
Release completely.
Begin to gently bring your awareness back to your body.
Notice the temperature of the air on your skin.
Notice the sounds around you,
The weight of your body where it meets the surface beneath you.
The support that has been here while you've explored strength.
Take one more slow breath in and let it go.
Now breathe deep.
And release completely.
If it feels comfortable,
Begin to wiggle your fingers or roll your shoulders.
Allowing movement to return without urgency.
As though your body can move without needing to brace first.
And when you're ready,
If you're ready.
Gently open your eyes.
Just inviting you to notice what did strength feel like for you today when it included choice.
Was there a moment where strength felt less fixed?
Or a place where the body still wanted to stay ready.
All of that is welcome.
Thank you for being here.
And for exploring strength in a new way.
Breathe deeply.
Release completely.
