Tyler and His Dream Pirates by Louise Houghton Once upon a time,
There was a little boy called Tyler.
And Tyler absolutely loved pirates.
Every story in his playroom was of the pirates.
He had all of the costumes.
He had all of the characters.
And he played with his ship every single day.
But Tyler was convinced that the pirates must be real.
That they weren't just fictional characters in his playroom.
Luckily for Tyler,
They lived by the beach.
It was just a hundred steps down to the beach.
And he went there every day to sit on the sand and look out to sea.
Always hopeful to see a pirate ship.
On one particular afternoon,
His mummy said that he could go down to the beach.
So Tyler walked his hundred steps down to the sand.
And he sat on the sand as usual.
That day,
Tyler was feeling a little tired.
So instead of looking out to sea as he normally does,
Always hoping to see that pirate ship.
He laid down in the sand,
Looking up at the sky.
It was a hot day.
And with the sun in his face,
He closed his eyes and took a little nap.
Not long afterwards,
Tyler got woken up.
He woke up to something touching his feet.
What could that be,
He thought,
Suddenly forgetting he was lying on the beach.
Did I wet myself?
He opened his eyes and of course it was the waves crashing at his feet.
They were getting louder and louder as he came to out of his nap.
And he realised that he was being pulled into the sea.
So of course as quickly as possible,
Tyler got up and moved back from the waves.
Having woken up,
He was able to go back to his quest for looking for the pirates.
He kept looking on the horizon at all of the ships.
And all of them just happened to be normal sailboats or cargo ships.
There weren't any pirate ships.
When are they going to come,
He thought.
How many days do I have to sit here waiting for them?
They must know I really want to see them.
Tyler was really disappointed.
And he put his head between his knees and started to feel very sad.
And as he did that,
He heard the waves get a little bit louder.
And he looked up.
And what was in front of him?
What was in front of him?
A pirate ship in the distance coming straight towards him.
He couldn't believe it.
Was this real,
He thought.
Tyler jumped up suddenly and waved his arms up in the air to try and get the pirates' attention.
Were they coming straight for him?
Could they see him?
He was so excited.
But the little boy,
Tyler,
Was just small.
And surely the pirates couldn't see him all the way out at sea.
And as he thought,
The pirate ship started to turn and no longer come straight towards him but go along the coast.
No,
He thought,
This was my chance.
I've been waiting so many days to see the pirates.
What can I do?
And he looked all around him and he thought there has to be something here that can make a noise,
That can make me seem bigger and louder.
He shouted,
He jumped,
He waved his arms.
And nothing seemed to work.
But just along the beach he saw a big stick.
And it was dried out so it had a hole in the middle.
And it worked like a didgeridoo.
He blew into the didgeridoo and a big,
Loud bellow made its way across the waves.
Ooooooh!
Ooooooh!
Just like a howl.
Hello,
Pirates!
He's shouting,
Hello,
Hello!
And the pirate ship suddenly seemed to stop.
Their sails came down and it stood motionless in the water.
At that moment,
Tyler wasn't sure if he should be a bit scared but he was certain they'd seen him.
The next thing he saw was all of the pirates quickly scuffling to the edge of the boat.
They got out their knives and their swords and they started shouting at the edge of the boat.
They wondered if they were in danger.
Or maybe that was Tyler.
Oh my goodness,
I just wanted to make friends with the pirates,
Not be their enemies,
Thought Tyler.
He said to them,
I'm your friend,
I'm your friend,
I want to join you.
He wasn't sure if the pirates could hear him.
But the next thing he saw was some of the pirates coming down the side of the big ship and getting into a dinghy.
Then they started coming closer and closer to the shore and Tyler got a little bit more nervous.
But as the pirates got closer and closer to the shore,
Tyler thought,
I'm not in trouble.
These people are here to see me.
And lo and behold,
The pirates said,
Arr,
Hello there little boy.
What are you doing here on the beach?
Tyler said,
I've been waiting for you every day.
I really wanted to see a pirate ship.
I've always wanted to see a real life one.
I've only got ones in my playroom.
What do you have on board?
And the pirates said,
Well,
We've got all sorts of things on board.
Do you want to have a look?
Here,
Take a little sip of our magic drink,
If you like.
Tyler thought,
Oh,
The pirates always have drinks.
But isn't it usually something for adults,
Something I'm not allowed?
But the pirates reassured them that it was something that he could have.
So he took a little sip and smiled because it was so juicy and fruity.
And of course,
What else do pirates usually have on their ships?
Treasure.
And sure enough,
They said to Tyler,
As you've been waiting here every day for us,
We want to give you a present.
And they gave him a wonderful bit of gold.
He was so happy with his bit of gold.
He put it quickly into his pocket to make sure he didn't lose it.
After taking another sip of the fruity juice,
They said to him,
Do you want to come on board then,
Tyler,
And take a look around the ship?
And Tyler said,
Yes,
Please.
Yes,
Please.
I always wanted to be a pirate when I grow up.
Tyler thought for a moment,
Maybe I should check with mummy.
And he turned around and he looked up at the house that he could see from the hundred steps.
And his mummy was there at the window looking down at him.
He gave a thumbs up and he waved.
And he got into the boat with the pirates,
Feeling very comfortable with them all.
And they all rowed back to the big pirate ship.
As he climbed up the riggings onto the boat with a big smile on his face,
All of the pirates greeted him with big cheers and lots of hugs.
They were so happy to have a little boy on board.
And they said to him,
Where do you want to take a look around first?
Do you want to go on top or do you want to go down below?
And he said,
What's down below?
They said,
Well,
That's the dungeons where we keep all of the baddies.
Do you want to see back down there?
And so he said,
Yes,
I really want to see down there.
So he took some slow steps down towards the dungeons.
And it was dark down there.
But with their candlelight,
He could see into the dungeon itself.
There was a metal cage as a door.
But he wanted to see inside,
So he walked in.
And the pirates shut the door behind him.
He was trapped.
He heard the noise.
And he turned around.
And they were all laughing.
Don't worry,
Tyler,
We're just joking around.
You can come out now.
You're not one of the baddies.
For you,
He thought.
My goodness.
He took a look around the rest of the boat with the pirates.
He looked at the hammocks where they slept.
He saw the tables where they ate their food.
He looked up at the front and over at the water.
What else would you like to see here,
Tyler?
Do you have a big treasure chest?
I'd love to see that.
We're sure we're pirates.
Of course we've got a treasure chest.
So they went into the front of the boat and opened the big treasure chest.
Some light was coming in through the window and gleaming on all of the gold.
He put his hand in there and ran his hand through all these tiny bits of gold and gems.
He couldn't believe his eyes.
It was a real treasure chest that the pirates had found on one of their quests.
Where did you find it?
He said.
Well,
Tyler,
X marks the spot,
As they say.
He thought he better not ask any more questions.
And then they said to him.
Hey,
Tyler,
Do you want to walk the plank?
Walk the plank,
He thought.
Isn't that what the baddies do?
Well,
Sure it is.
But,
You know,
You can walk the plank and jump off and then you can swim back to shore.
And he thought,
Well,
That's a great way to get home.
So after he played some games with the pirates,
He said,
OK,
Time to walk the plank then.
And he gave everybody on board a big hug.
And he said,
Thank you so much for showing me around.
I really am happy to see this.
Please come back.
I hope to see you again.
And so he got up onto the plank and he walked the plank and he jumped off into the water.
And then he swam his way back to the beach.
Everybody on board waved at Tyler from afar.
Thank you so much for coming on board,
Tyler.
It was so lovely to meet you.
You really made our day.
And he said,
You made my day.
Thank you so much for having me on board and for coming to see me here.
Tyler couldn't believe his luck.
He was smiling from ear to ear.
Had he really just been on a real-life pirate ship?
He was wet from swimming to shore,
But he laid down on the beach in that strong sunshine and looked up at the skies once again,
Not believing the luck of the day.
He closed his eyes to relive the moments on the pirate ship.
The scary moment when they closed the dungeon door.
The little bit of nervousness as he walked the plank before the joy of jumping off.
But how friendly all of the pirates had been to him.
And the wonderful fruity magic drink he got to try.
He was never going to forget that flavour.
He laid down.
He looked up at the sky and his eyes felt all heavy again.
And suddenly he fell asleep.
With all the excitement,
He was tired.
A couple of hours later,
Tyler woke to something wet at his feet.
What could that be,
He thought,
Forgetting where he was.
And as he came to,
He realised that he's on the beach.
And what was at his feet?
The waves,
Coming in again,
Clashing at his feet.
He got up slowly this time,
Dry as a bone from the hot sun.
And was starting to wonder whether it was all a dream.
He was dry,
His clothes weren't wet anymore.
Had the pirates really been here?
Or was it all in his imagination?
He decided it must have been a dream.
Because he'd been waiting there so many days before and nothing had ever happened.
And his clothes were dry.
And he couldn't taste the fruity drink in his mouth.
So with his head low,
He thought,
I better go back to the house.
He started walking the hundred steps back to the house.
And put his hands in his pockets as it was getting a little cold.
But what was in his pockets?
What's this,
He thought.
What was it?
It was the treasure.
The treasure that the pirates had given him was in his pocket.
And my goodness,
That big smile came back from ear to ear.
Because he knew that if he had the gold,
That the pirates must have been real.
It was real.
He had tasted the magic drink.
He had seen the dungeons.
He had walked the plank.
He had put his hand into the treasure chest.
What an amazing day.
It was real.
And so Tyler hopped and skipped all the way home because he couldn't wait to tell his mummy all about the pirates and the fun that he'd had on the beach that day.
Tyler finally got to meet the pirates for real.
He was the happiest boy on the beach.
