Your thoughts may be powerful—but they are not who you are. In today’s 5 Minutes In Nature, Liz reflects on the freedom that arises when we recognise we are so much more than the thoughts that pass through our minds. What might open up for you if you truly realised: I am not my thinking?

Hello and welcome to Five Minutes in Nature with me Liz Scott.

It's an intensely humidly hot sense to the day.

It's one of those days that is both blustery,

Showery,

Dark clouds are ominously around and when the sun comes out through the patches of blue there's an intense heat but also there's a sense that rain is not far away.

And it's interesting,

I'm just sheltering in a gully on the moors and I can see amidst the greenery of the bracken there is an almost perfect spider's web with a spider right at the centre of it and the actual strands of the web are festooned with what looks like little jewels of raindrops.

So the web which normally would be very well hidden is actually very easy to see.

I don't know if you're going to catch many flies today,

That little spider sitting in the middle of the web.

And today the reflection is all about thought and the realisation that we're not our thought and our thinking.

I'm going to come on to that in a minute.

But yesterday we set a little challenge,

Or I set myself a challenge and invited you to join me,

Which is a challenge of living from love rather than fear.

And I'm going to report back on that challenge in tomorrow's recording.

But if you haven't taken that challenge for yourself,

It's just an invitation to see what it's like just for a day or 12 hours or half a day to purposefully live from a place of love rather than a place of fear.

What is that like?

What turns up for you?

And I'll report back on what I've noticed for myself tomorrow and I'd love to hear back from you then.

But today is just a reflection that you are not your thoughts.

You are not your thinking.

It's actually quite a relief and very freeing,

This is how I found it,

To realise that I am not my thinking.

I was coaching someone the other day and they talked about the sense of feeling paralysed.

They're in a position,

A new position,

There's a lot of work to assimilate people to meet,

Understanding the nature of the new business that they're in.

And as my client was talking,

She said,

I just feel like I'm paralysed with everything,

I don't know where to start.

Now,

In the past as a coach,

Because I've been coaching for many,

Many years,

Years before I came across the Inside Out Understanding,

I would have taken that recognition of her being in a sense of paralysis,

Mental paralysis,

As something we needed to get busy on.

So I would have rolled up my sleeves and together we would have looked at it in great detail to try and find a way of getting rid of that paralysis.

Like,

Yeah,

You need to get rid of the paralysis in order to get on with life.

I see that very differently now.

She doesn't need to get rid of the thought of paralysis because it's just a thought.

It's not her.

How do I know it's not her?

Because she is the one experiencing it.

And if she is experiencing it,

Then it can't be her.

Because we can't both simultaneously experience something and be something at the same time.

The thinking of paralysis is separate from her.

And when we start to notice the power of our thinking and thought,

And the feelings are a great indicator of this,

We start to realise that we are experiencing so many different thoughts and feelings all the time and we don't actually need to do anything about them.

Because we are not those thoughts or feelings.

She is not paralysis.

I am not overwhelmed when I fall into my sense of overwhelm.

I am.

That's the bit to be really curious about.

Who or what is the I am?

And as far as I can tell,

The I am is the changeless,

Everlasting,

Present awareness of true nature,

Of who I truly am,

You truly are,

We all truly are.

So nowadays when someone gets lost in thoughts of paralysis or overwhelm or imposter syndrome,

I know I don't need to get busy trying to fix those thoughts for them as a coach.

I know they don't need to.

As soon as they've seen them,

They are actually on the pathway to realising that those thoughts,

Like these clouds above me,

Will just pass on by.

They'll pass on by.

So I'd be curious as to what you hear from this for yourself,

You are not your thoughts and thinking.

You are much more than that.

And bring your awareness to that which you are,

Rather than trying to fix that which you are not.

Let me know how you get on with that today.

Thanks Liz 🙏🏼 Well this is an interesting 🤔 subject and probably one that could have a lot of time spent exploring it. If we aren’t our thoughts why do we have them ? Don’t we need to think though about how we will plan our holiday, therefore we have thoughts ? That spiders web sounds beautiful. The spider doesn’t have the thought then, when it is sitting in its web waiting for a fly, of ‘I have constructed this amazing food trap and soon I shall he rewarded with lunch’ The spider doesnt think about constructing its web, it automatically spins it and waits for a fly through a process of Nature ? Nature doesn’t have thoughts. It operates on an inate sense of being. Is that what we as humans are meant to do ? We seem to he more complex than Nature because of our thoughts ? Love to know your thoughts on my thoughts 😀 🌿🙏🏼🤔🙏🏼🌿

This is a little tough to do-requires a big shift in default behavior! What if the thoughts don’t really “pass on by”? Or keep coming back? Just keep practicing?
