Spirituality and in the words of Anthony DiBello,

Spirituality means waking up.

Most people,

Even though they don't know it,

Are asleep.

They're born asleep,

They live asleep,

They marry in their sleep,

They have children in their sleep and they die in their sleep without ever waking up.

They never understand the loveliness and beauty of this thing we call human existence.

All learned people,

Regardless of denomination,

Regardless of theology,

Regardless of religion,

Are unanimous in one thing that all is well.

All is well.

Even though everything is a mess,

All is well.

But tragically,

Most people never get to see that all is well because they are asleep.

They are having a nightmare.

There's a story about this gentleman who knocks on his son's door.

Jamie,

He says,

Wake up.

Jamie answers,

I don't want to get up papa.

The father shouts,

Get up,

You have to go to school.

Jamie answers,

I don't want to go to school.

Why not,

Asks the father.

Three reasons,

Says Jamie.

First,

Because it is so dull.

Second,

The kids tease me.

And third,

I hate school.

And the father says,

Well,

I'm going to give you three reasons why you must go to school.

First,

Because it is your duty.

Second,

Because you are 45 years old.

And third,

Because you're the headmaster.

So wake up,

Wake up,

You've grown up,

You're too big to be asleep.

Wake up and stop playing with your toys.

As a coach,

Most people will tell you that they want to wake up.

But don't believe them,

Don't believe them.

All they want you to do is to let them continue sleeping,

To let them continue having their dream.

Give me back my wife.

Give me back my job.

Give me back my money.

Give me back my reputation.

Give me back my success.

This is what they want.

They simply want their toys replaced.

They simply want to go back to sleep.

That's all.

And most psychologists will tell you that most people don't really want a cure.

What they want is relief.

Because a cure is painful.

So waking up is unpleasant.

It's nice and comfortable in bed.

And it's irritating to be woken up.

The five stages of spiritual growth.

It starts with spiritually dead,

Then the spiritual infant,

The spiritual child,

Being spiritually awake and finally becoming a spiritual influence.

So let's begin with the first stage.

Spiritually dead.

So in the arena of personal development,

This stage represents a state of disconnection from one's inner self and a sense of deeper purpose.

And it can manifest as a lack of direction where we feel unfulfilled,

Where we feel like we are not getting anywhere despite our external achievements.

You can picture a tiny acorn buried deep in the earth.

It's alive,

But it's unaware of its potential to become a mighty oak tree.

It lies dormant,

Feeling the weight of the soil above it,

Content with its existence,

Unaware that it could become something more.

Its world is dark and confined,

Defined by the cold hard ground that surrounds it.

The acorn doesn't know that life could be different,

That it holds within itself the power to grow into this strong,

Powerful,

Towering tree.

Consider someone who is entirely focused on their career,

Constantly chasing promotions,

Chasing pay rises,

But feels this persistent emptiness despite their material success.

This person might feel like their life lacks meaning and relies on external validation to fill an internal void.

Another example could be a person who,

After a significant loss,

Feels completely lost and numb,

Disconnected from any sense of purpose or direction.

They might turn to distractions like excessive social media or substance abuse to avoid confronting their feelings of emptiness.

To move beyond this stage,

Self-awareness becomes crucial.

Strategies like mindfulness,

Therapy,

Introspection can help.

As we start applying these strategies,

We begin to explore the inner world and recognize the void caused by this disconnection and this sets the stage for spiritual growth.

The next stage is a spiritual infant.

And this is where the individual starts to seek meaning,

But their understanding is still in infancy.

We are curious about deeper truths,

Yet the grasp of these concepts is quite rudimentary.

Going back to the acorn,

One day the rains come and the acorn begins to absorb water and nutrients from the soil.

It starts to change,

Cracking open as a small shoot pushes its way up to the earth.

The sprout is fragile and inexperienced,

Reaching out towards sunlight for the first time.

It doesn't know what lies above the surface,

But something within urges it to grow.

The seedling is curious and hopeful,

But it still relies on the surrounding soil and the rain to nurture its growth.

You can imagine someone who attends a yoga class for the first time and feels intrigued by the concept of inner peace,

But doesn't yet understand how to achieve it.

So they might start reading books,

But their knowledge is still very basic and dependent on external sources.

Another example is someone who comes across a life coaching course and as he starts going through the course or as she starts going through the course,

She finds these concepts that are quite interesting and that start creating some kind of a curiosity in them.

So in this stage,

Nurturing curiosity,

Self-reflection,

These are key.

Activities like journaling,

Getting involved in mentorship,

These can help us as individuals process these experiences and begin to develop a more personal connection to their spirituality,

Preparing them for the next stage of growth.

The next stage,

The spiritual child and this represents a period of growth and enthusiasm,

But the focus often remains self-centered.

In applied psychology,

This stage is similar to a developmental phase where we as individuals are forming a personal identity,

But we are still primarily concerned with our own needs.

Going back to the acorn,

As the days pass,

The sprout breaks to the surface and sees the world for the first time.

It's no longer a tiny sprout,

But it is now a young sapling and it's growing taller every day.

The sapling bathes in the warmth of the sun,

Feeling proud of its progress.

It begins to develop leaves and branches,

Soaking in the sunlight and thriving.

The sapling is strong enough to stand on its own,

But it still focuses on growing taller and stronger and it's not yet aware of the larger forest around it.

A newly certified life coach recently completed their training and started their coaching practice.

At this stage,

They are full of enthusiasm and eager to apply the techniques and knowledge they've gained,

But their focus is largely on refining their skills,

Gaining confidence and developing their unique coaching style.

They might take on a few clients,

Maybe at a lower rate of free sessions to build experience.

While they are passionate about helping others,

Most of their energy is directed towards their own personal growth,

Learning how to be an effective coach,

Building their brand,

Navigating the challenges of starting a new business.

They are at a stage where self-discovery and personal development are at the forefront and this is to lay the groundwork for future influence.

So during this stage,

The focus should be on expanding one's perspective,

Engaging in practices that encourage empathy and a broader view like volunteering,

Community service.

These can help shift the focus from self-centered spirituality to a more interconnected and compassionate approach.

Moving to the next stage,

Spiritually awake.

The spiritually awake stage marks a significant shift in consciousness where we begin to see beyond our personal needs and recognize the interconnectedness of all life and this awakening brings a deeper sense of purpose and responsibility.

Back to the acorn,

Years pass and the sapling grows into a strong sturdy oak tree.

Its roots dig deep into the earth and its branches spread wide providing shade and shelter to the creatures of the forest.

The oak tree begins to realize its place in the ecosystem.

It's no longer just growing for itself,

It's part of something larger.

It understands that its strength comes from the earth below and the sun above and it is connected to every living thing around it.

It feels a deep sense of purpose knowing that it contributes to the life of the forest.

You can imagine someone who after years of doing the work,

Years of practicing begins to see the interconnectedness of life.

They feel a strong sense of responsibility towards the environment,

Towards the community,

Towards the people around them and they may do things like reducing their carbon footprint or engaging in community activities not only for personal satisfaction but also for a genuine concern possibly for the planet or for other people.

Another example could be a person who after experiencing personal loss finds solace in helping others who are grieving.

They move beyond their own pain and they offer support and compassion to others recognizing that their healing is connected to the healing of those around them.

So at this stage personal development should focus on deepening this awareness and applying it in daily life.

Mindfulness practices,

Ethical living,

Continuous self-reflection this becomes crucial and the goal is to integrate this awareness into every aspect of our life making choices that reflect a commitment to higher principles.

And finally the last stage spiritual influence.

This stage represents the culmination of spiritual growth where we not only embody our spiritual beliefs but also inspire and guide others.

This stage aligns with concepts in applied psychology like leadership and mentoring.

Going back to the acorn as decades pass the oak tree becomes one of the oldest and tallest in the forest.

Its branches provide a home for birds and its roots stabilize the soil and its acorns feed the animals.

Younger trees look up to the oak drawing inspiration from its strength and wisdom.

The oak tree has weathered many seasons and countless storms.

It stands tall and strong,

A beacon of resilience and life.

It doesn't just exist,

It influences the entire forest nurturing new life and guiding the growth of others.

Consider a person who after years of practice becomes a mentor or a coach guiding others on their journey.

They don't just teach techniques but live as an example showing how applying the principles can lead to a fulfilling and purposeful life.

Another example is a community leader who driven by their beliefs initiates programs that support people.

Their work is not only about achieving external goals but about uplifting others and fostering a sense of shared humanity.

So for those in this stage the focus could be on mentoring and giving back and personal development at this level would involve honing leadership skills,

Practicing humility,

Continuing to grow through service to others and ensuring that their influence is rooted in genuine care and spiritual principles.

And so like the oak tree from a dormant acorn to a wise old oak these reflect the stages of spiritual growth.

Just as the oak grew and evolved so too do we progress through these stages each step bringing us closer to our true potential and a deeper connection with the world around us.

And understanding these five stages it provides a powerful framework for personal development.

It guides us from self-discovery to a place where we can positively influence the world.

Spiritual growth in personal development is not simply about reaching a final destination but continually evolving,

Learning and living in harmony with the world around us.

Thank you.
