There are moments when shame doesn't just feel like something you're experiencing.
It feels like you.
Like something has been revealed.
Something about who you are.
And your body can feel it immediately.
That heat.
That tightening.
Almost like pain.
Maybe your mind starts moving quickly.
Replaying what happened,
What you said,
What you should have done differently.
Trying to understand.
Trying to correct.
And make sure it does not happen again.
And underneath all of that,
There's a sense that you've moved too far away from people.
From belonging.
Something in you is saying they don't want you.
But something in you is also saying don't lose them.
So for just a moment,
We're not going to try to get rid of this.
We're not going to try to replace it with something better.
And we're not going to try to convince you otherwise.
We're just going to stay.
Begin by noticing your body.
Notice where you are right now.
Feel the surface beneath you holding you.
Supporting you.
Feel your breath moving in and out without your effort.
And then gently,
Without forcing anything,
Just notice.
Is there any trace of that feeling here?
A tightness?
A heat or contraction?
Allow yourself to feel it without labeling it.
And as you do,
Just notice how immediate it is.
How physical it is.
Almost like your body is responding to something important.
Because it is.
This is your body trying to keep you connected.
Trying to keep you close to others.
Trying to make sure you have a place.
And instead of arguing with it,
Just let it be here.
This is not proof that something is wrong with you.
This is something in you trying to help you stay connected.
You don't have to believe that yet.
Just allow the possibility to exist alongside what you feel.
As you stay with it,
You might notice the way your attention turns toward yourself.
The way everything becomes about you.
What you did.
Who you are.
What it means.
That's part of it.
But very gently,
You might begin to shift your attention outward just slightly.
Just widening.
Noticing the space around you.
The sounds in the room.
The feeling of the air.
And letting both exist.
This feeling and the world around you.
You might place a hand on your body.
Just to make contact.
And noticing even here,
You are still part of something.
You haven't left.
You haven't been removed.
Even if it feels that way.
And if it feels accessible.
You might bring to mind something that feels even slightly connecting.
Something.
Person.
Place.
Or even just the sense that you exist among other humans.
Not separate from them.
And let that sit next to the feeling.
Not replacing it or cancelling it out.
Just both here.
Together.
Shame pulls you inward.
But it's pointing toward something outward.
Connection.
You don't have to resolve that right now.
Just noticing the intensity.
And the possibility of connection.
Existing at the same time.
Nothing has to be decided.
You are here.
And this is here.
And you are not outside of being human in this.
And when you're ready.
Gently return your attention outward.
To the room.
To the sounds.
To the space around you.
And carrying with you the possibility.
That even in shame.
Something in you is still reaching toward a connection.
