Welcome to your cocoon of darkness.

A Yoga Nidra practice designed specifically to guide you into sleep.

A deep,

Restful sleep.

In the next few minutes,

We'll work with the nurturing qualities of darkness.

Exploring how night can become a sanctuary,

Rather than something to fear or resist.

This practice invites you to experience darkness as a protective cocoon.

A space where you can feel safe,

Held,

And completely at ease.

As we move through the session,

You'll be guided to release tension from your body,

Quiet your busy mind,

And surrender to the gentle embrace of darkness.

Think of this practice as a transformation journey,

Similar to a caterpillar in its cocoon.

While wrapped in darkness,

The caterpillar changes completely.

In the same way,

This nighttime practice allows you to shed the tensions of your day and transform within your own protective cocoon.

You rest in this nurturing darkness.

You're preparing to emerge refreshed and renewed when the morning comes,

Just as a butterfly emerges,

Transformed after its time in the cocoon.

So see tonight as your cocooning time,

A sacred period of rest and renewal that allows you to wake tomorrow with new energy and perspective.

I recommend you start this session in your bed with nothing left to do today.

Make sure you've set your alarm,

Brushed your teeth,

Or whatever else you need to do before bedtime.

There won't be any words or sounds to close off this practice.

I'll let you drift off into sleep at the end.

But first start by lying down in your bed,

Covering yourself with blankets as much as feels comfortable.

And let's begin our journey into the cocoon of darkness.

Come lie down on your back,

Arms and legs spread out a little,

Palms facing up,

And close your eyes.

Take a deep breath in and a deep breath out.

Imagine soaking up the healing darkness when you breathe in and letting go of the day when you breathe out.

Deep inhale and a deep exhale.

Perfect.

Return to your natural breath,

Whatever slow or fast it may be.

This gentle darkness around you is a protective cocoon.

It's not something to fear.

It's a soft presence that nurtures rest and rejuvenation.

Relax to the rhythm of your breath,

And if you wish,

Set an intention for this practice,

For the night.

It could be a simple phrase like,

I welcome deep,

Restful sleep,

Or I find peace in my cocoon of darkness.

Repeat this intention silently to yourself three times,

Allowing it to sink deeply into your mind like a star settling into the night sky.

Let your intention glow softly within the protective embrace of your cocoon.

Let it glow and let it go.

You can visualize your intention as a butterfly emerging from its cocoon.

Watch as it gently unfolds its wings,

Still soft and new,

Gradually strengthening as it prepares for flight.

This butterfly,

Carrying your attention,

Slowly lifts up,

Floating effortlessly into the night sky,

Becoming one with the darkness.

Just as this butterfly transforms and takes flight,

Your intention is now set free.

You've set it.

It's out there.

Enjoy a few quiet breaths,

In and out.

Soft darkness wraps around you like a favorite sweater or blanket,

Inviting your body to release and your mind to quiet.

Allow the world outside to dissolve as you surrender to the protective cocoon of the night.

Search for the subtle sounds of the night.

Do you hear any sounds?

Maybe you live in the city and hear the city murmur.

Or maybe it's nearly quiet and the sound of the breath is all you can distinguish in the night.

Take a moment to notice the points of contact between your body and the surface beneath you.

Feel the weight of your body surrendering to gravity,

Being held and supported completely.

As daylight gently fades from your awareness,

Feel yourself sinking deeper into this moment.

The soft darkness invites your body to release,

Your mind to quiet.

Allow the world outside to dissolve as the cocoon thickens and you surrender to this protective chamber of the night.

Bring your awareness to your breath.

Notice the natural rhythm of your inhale and exhale,

Without trying to change it.

With each exhale,

Feel yourself melting further into the nurturing darkness.

Now we'll bring our awareness to each part of the body,

Allowing it to dissolve into the darkness,

One by one.

Let's start at your right foot.

Feel the sensations there.

Perhaps heaviness,

Tingling or warmth.

As you exhale,

Imagine your right foot dissolving into the velvety darkness.

It becomes weightless.

Move to your right calf,

Right thigh and right hip.

With each exhalation,

These parts disappear into the night,

Becoming one with the darkness.

And now your left foot.

Notice how it feels to let go,

To rest.

Feel your calf fade into stillness.

Your left thigh,

Left hip.

Relax your pelvic area.

And feel your spine release all tension.

Your belly relaxes.

Your chest area.

Your entire torso.

Your right shoulder sinks into the darkness,

In the cocoon.

Your right upper arm melts.

Your elbow.

Lower arm.

Your wrist.

Palm of your hand.

Back of your hand.

Thumb.

Index finger.

Middle finger.

Ring finger.

And little finger.

They all dissolve into the night.

Feel how your left shoulder fades into darkness.

Your left upper arm relaxes.

Elbow.

Lower arm.

Your wrist lets go.

The palm of your hand.

Back of your hand.

Thumb.

Index finger.

Middle finger.

Ring finger.

And little finger.

Complete relaxation.

Your shoulders and neck give into gravity.

Let go.

Now your face joins in,

In this little relaxation party.

Begin with your forehead.

Feel your forehead softening.

Dissolving into the darkness.

Any tension melts away.

Your eyes become heavy and soft.

Sinking back.

The tiny muscles around your eyes unravel completely as they disappear into the velvety darkness.

Your cheeks and temples now soften and release.

Feel how their edges blur,

Fading into your cocoon.

Release your jaw,

Allowing it to slacken.

Feel it grow heavy and then surrender completely to the night.

Maybe your lips part slightly as they too soften.

Any words drifting away into stillness.

Your entire face is now too in your protective cocoon.

Feel the wave of relaxation deepen throughout your body,

Inviting you to sink further into darkness.

This velvety darkness weaves itself around you,

Creating a sacred cocoon just for you.

And within it,

You are completely safe to let go.

Feel how the darkness shields you.

Nothing can disturb you here as you disappear into the heart of your cocoon,

Finding perfect,

Restful stillness.

Now imagine yourself standing at the edge of a midnight garden.

The sky above you is deep indigo,

Scattered with stars that shimmer like distant diamonds.

The air is cool against your skin,

But not cold.

There's a gentle warmth beneath your feet.

As your eyes adjust to the darkness,

You notice the outlines of flowers closing for the night.

Their petals folded in sleep.

Moonlight casts a soft,

Silver-blue glow over everything.

Revealing pathways lined with lavender and night-blooming jasmine.

The subtle fragrance rises up to meet you.

It's sweet and comforting.

In the center of this garden stands an ancient tree.

Its branch is reaching toward the starlit sky.

Beneath it lies a bed of the softest moss,

Creating a perfect natural bed.

You can move toward it.

It's inviting you.

As you settle onto this natural bed,

You feel the moss embracing your body.

Above you,

The branches of the tree create a protective canopy,

Filtering the moonlight into a dance of gentle shadows.

The darkness here isn't empty or threatening.

It's rich with life and comfort.

It holds you,

Protects you,

Allows you to truly rest.

With each breath,

You dissolve further into this sanctuary.

The boundaries between you and the garden are blurring.

Feel yourself becoming part of the night itself.

As fast as the starry sky.

As peaceful as the sleeping flowers.

As rooted as the ancient tree.

In this midnight garden,

Wrapped in darkness,

You are completely safe.

You can let go completely,

Disappearing into the perfect peace of night.

Sink deeper and deeper.

And if you're still with me in this garden,

You can maybe repeat your intention again.

Plant the seeds of your intention in your midnight garden.

Very good.

Very gentle.

There is nothing more you need to do.

No need to move.

No need to open your eyes.

Allow your breath to become even softer.

Slower.

Deeper.

Just sink deeper and deeper.

Surrender.

Surrender.

Give yourself permission to drift off completely.

Let go of my guidance.

Let go of any effort to stay awake or alert.

Dissolve into your cocoon of darkness.

Disappearing into the velvet night.

The boundary between practice and sleep melts away.

Allow yourself to be carried on gentle currents of darkness.

Floating deeper and deeper into slumber.

Your body melts into the darkness as your mind surrenders to sleep's gentle healing touch.

Enjoy your very own cocoon of darkness.

Sweet dreams.
