This extended version of the Body Scan and the Breath and Body Meditation has particular emphasis on working with painful physical sensations. This practice introduces ways of working with discomfort or pain, using uncomfortable sensations as object of awareness by investigating quality, duration, and the nature of sensations, to promote improved wellbeing, happiness and mental clarity, while shifting attention to the anchor of the breath if sensations are overwhelming. We will also explore the possibility of bringing awareness to emotions or thoughts that might also be present with physical pain or other sensations (e.g. tightening, bracing, constricting when experiencing pain). This can also be expanded to emotional pain or discomfort, using uncomfortable emotions as objects of awareness, and shifting attention to the breath if emotions become too difficult.
