Welcome to this guided meditation for embracing loneliness.
Loneliness is an important emotion and we must learn to listen to its wisdom rather than trying to ignore it or distract ourselves away from it.
Let's take a little time together to learn what loneliness is trying to tell us.
Take a comfortable position for this meditation,
Seated or lying down as you wish.
You may like to take a few deep breaths to let go of whatever's been going on for you today so that you can focus on what's happening right now.
Settle into the shape you've taken in your body.
If that comes with movement or fidgeting,
That's just fine.
Take a moment to feel the earth underneath your body rising up to meet you.
Allow your body to settle into that support,
Releasing any tension that you may be holding on to.
Now take a moment to feel into your body.
Scan your awareness from your crown to your toes and notice how you feel.
Your mood,
Your energy,
And any sensations that are present throughout your body.
Now let's focus in on the sensation of loneliness.
Invite loneliness into your body.
Feel the earth.
Feel the earth.
Feel the earth.
Feel the earth.
Feel the earth.
Feel the earth.
Feel the earth.
Perhaps you've recently lost a loved one or a pet or moved away to a new place.
Perhaps you have plenty of people in your life,
But you simply feel that none of them understand you.
You may also notice other stories,
Stories about the future arising.
Perhaps this is something like,
I will always be alone,
Or no one can ever understand me,
Or no one will ever love me for who I am.
Notice if those stories are present as well.
We're not trying to fix them or argue with them or agree with them right now.
Simply notice the narratives floating around in your mind about your experience of loneliness.
Now focus away from what's happening in your mind and see if you can locate loneliness in your body.
Follow your breath into your body and notice where loneliness lives for you.
For many of us it lives around the heart and chest area,
Possibly the shoulders.
Observe the sensations here.
Do they have a color,
A texture,
A temperature?
Is there an image that comes up for you as you imagine this lonely part of you?
The experience of loneliness is never about how many people you see in your day-to-day life.
It's a deep yearning for true connection,
For feeling seen,
Heard,
And held for who you really are.
Allow your loneliness to speak for what you truly miss.
If you listen to this physical part of you,
Which is crying out with loneliness,
What does it say?
Notice if this part of you speaks with words,
Images,
Sensations,
Or simply silence,
There's no right or wrong here.
Simply listen to what's happening in your body.
Is there anything that you would like to say to this part of you,
From the part of you that loves yourself and wants the best for you?
Perhaps there's something this part is asking of you.
Is there a way that you could help this part,
Which is in pain?
If you're not sure what to say,
You could simply tell this part,
I'm with you.
You could also place your hands over this part of your body as you do this,
Honoring and holding your loneliness,
This call to feel more connected in some way.
Breathe deeply into this part of your body.
Right now,
You're holding yourself with tenderness and care.
You are connecting with your body and nourishing your spirit with this time spent listening to your body.
Even when you are completely alone,
You still have this,
Your body and the connection you're working to cultivate with your own self.
You always have your own back.
Take your time in this space,
Holding and breathing into what you feel.
The stories in your mind may still be present or they may not,
That's okay.
But continue to honor the needs of your body in whatever way you can.
And if possible,
Seek to be as gentle with yourself as you can today.
Thank you for listening.
