Hi there.
Loving-kindness meditation,
Or metta,
Is a simple yet powerful practice that nurtures self-compassion,
Strengthens emotional well-being,
And deepens our connection with those around us.
A few moments of intentional kindness toward yourself and others can have a lasting impact.
Let's begin.
Find a steady and comfortable position,
Sitting in a way that feels both natural and honoring of yourself and this moment.
Let your hands rest gently in your lap,
Allowing your body to settle.
Softly close your eyes,
And with each exhale,
Begin releasing any tension,
Whether in your body,
Your thoughts.
Or your heart.
Let the out-breath be a gentle letting go,
Making space for ease and presence.
Once you feel settled,
Bring your attention to this moment and gently tune into your heart Notice how you're feeling right now,
Without judgment.
Let your breath soften and expand into your heart space,
As if you are breathing directly in and out of this place.
Now let's invite the inner smile.
Ever so gently,
Lift the corners of your lips,
Allowing your face to soften.
Then lift the corners of your eyes.
And now,
Imagine the corners of your heart lifting as well.
This is your inner smile.
Rest in this lightness,
Using your breath as an anchor.
If thoughts arise,
Simply notice them.
Let them drift like clouds and return to your breath.
Now,
Bring yourself to mind.
Visualize yourself as you are in this moment.
Exactly as you are.
Without needing to change anything.
With a sense of care and kindness,
Silently say to yourself,
May I be well.
May I be happy.
May my heart be open and filled with loving-kindness.
And may I enjoy true peace in my life.
With each inhale,
Breathe loving-kindness into your heart,
And with each exhale,
Send this loving-kindness throughout your entire being.
Now bring to mind someone you love,
Perhaps a friend,
A family member,
Or a pet.
Allow yourself to feel the love you hold for them.
Picture them as if they were standing or sitting right in front of you.
And from your heart,
Silently offer them these words.
May you be well.
May you be happy.
May your heart be open and filled with loving-kindness.
And may you enjoy true peace in your life.
Staying with your breath,
Fill your smiling heart with loving-kindness on the in-breath,
And with the exhale,
Send waves of loving-kindness to every part of this being.
Now,
Call to mind a neutral person.
Perhaps someone you see in passing,
A neighbor,
A bus driver,
Or a security guard.
Someone whose life quietly intersects with yours.
Picture them sitting or standing in front of you and recognize their humanity,
Their joys,
Their struggles,
Just like your own pain.
From your heart,
Offer them these words.
May you be well.
May you be happy.
May your heart be open and filled with loving-kindness.
And may you enjoy true peace in your life.
With each breath in,
Let your heart fill with loving-kindness.
With each breath out,
Send it to every part of this person's being.
Now bring to mind someone with whom you experience difficulty.
They may be someone who has caused you pain or someone with whom you have a challenging relationship.
Acknowledge any feelings that arise,
Allowing them to be just as they are,
Without pushing them away.
Picture this person sitting or standing in front of you,
And with as much sincerity as you can,
Offer them these words.
May you be well.
May you be happy.
May your heart be open and filled with loving-kindness.
And may you enjoy true peace in your life.
Breathing in,
Fill your heart with loving kindness.
Breathing out,
Send that loving-kindness to every part of this person's being.
Now,
Let this loving-kindness expand outward.
Imagine it flowing from your heart and rippling outward to all beings and to all life.
With an open heart,
Offer this wish to all beings everywhere.
May all beings be well.
May all beings be happy.
May all beings' hearts be open and filled with loving-kindness.
And may all beings enjoy true peace in this life.
With each breath in,
Feel your smiling heart radiate loving-kindness.
With each breath out,
Send loving-kindness to all beings,
Near and far,
Known and unknown.
And just rest in this feeling of loving-kindness as it spreads to all beings and to all of life.
Thank you.
Before you open your eyes,
I invite you to bring your hands to your heart or to any place that feels meaningful to you.
Take a moment to acknowledge this practice,
This moment of connection.
Honor the warmth of your own heart.
And when you're ready.
.
.
Gently open your eyes.
Thank you for taking the time to practice with me today.
May kindness and peace stay with you throughout the rest of your day.
