I would like to share a very effective method for inducing deep sleep by making specific connections with your energy circulation system.
So it is ideal to begin your night of sleep lying on your back,
Which is how we will begin this practice.
If it is most comfortable for you to fall asleep laying on your stomach,
Or that's your initial position you usually go to,
This is an indication of deep fatigue,
Which could possibly be helped by harmonizing the spleen function energy.
If you favor falling asleep on your left or right side,
It's an indication that that side of the body may need energy circulation support,
As comfort accommodates tension.
You're innately giving in to that side of the body that has more tension.
We'll address these needs in other lessons.
For now,
At least begin your night of sleep lying on your back.
If you feel the need to turn to one of your sides later to accommodate tension,
That's okay.
It is also ideal to have your room as dark as possible,
Or wear an eye mask,
As the pineal gland produces more melatonin in response to darkness.
As you're lying on your back,
Bring both of your hands to rest at the base of your rib cage,
Along the diaphragm.
Your elbows are comfortably resting out to the side.
Bring your shoulders down so they're not hugging your ears,
Lengthen your legs,
And then relax into your bed,
Letting go from head to toe.
With your right hand,
Hold your left little finger,
So your whole left little finger is snug in the palm of your right hand.
It may be that the space between your left little and ring fingers are interlocked with the space between your right index and thumb.
However you want to make this connection is okay.
Just hold as much of your little finger as you can.
The little fingers are where the heart energy meridian transposes into the small intestine function meridian.
The small intestine is the energy of analyzing and discernment.
It's influenced by Virgo,
I analyze.
As the small intestine receives food from the stomach,
It analyzes what's a protein,
What's a carb,
What's a fat,
What's a mineral.
A busy mind or being over analytical is often associated with insomnia and difficulty falling asleep.
So holding the little finger will cool down the fire element of the heart and calm the analyzing mind.
As your hands are resting along the diaphragm,
This is also contributing to quieting the mind.
If you listen to the introductory talk about our energy circulation system,
You may remember this area as being the energy equator of the body,
The dividing line between above and below.
Above representing heaven or spirit,
Below representing earth or matter.
This dividing equator representing the mind,
Which is the mediator between heaven and earth or the spiritual and material world.
The safety energy locks near the bottom of your ribcage along the diaphragm where your hands are resting also help with this energy equilibrium.
For this jumper cabling practice of inducing deep sleep,
You simply want to hold your little finger for several long minutes,
Paying attention to your breath and meditating on the pulse.
When you catch your mind wandering,
You will be reminded to redirect your attention back to your breath and the pulse.
After you've held your little finger for several long minutes and give it some time,
For some people,
Just connecting here for five or seven minutes will be enough.
After the little finger,
You'll hold the base of the thumb of your left hand.
Either rest your right hand on top of your left hand and tuck your right thumb under the palm of your left hand,
Make a connection with the padded area at the base of your thumb,
Or you can hold your whole left thumb similar to the way you held your little finger to where the tips of your right middle finger or index finger can connect with this area.
There's a safety energy lock there in the thicker padded part just below the bottom knuckle.
If you feel around,
You'll probably find a tender spot.
Even if you don't,
As long as you're touching that area,
You have an active connection.
The energy lock at the bottom of your thumb is commonly known to help headaches,
So holding here is essentially helping to pull energy down from the head.
Now you want to connect with this energy lock for several long minutes,
Paying attention to your breath and meditating on the pulse.
If you're still awake,
You can move back to the little finger and jumper cable it again,
And then back to the thumb.
This is essentially the recipe.
If you have chronic insomnia,
You may move back and forth between the little finger and base of the thumb several times before you fade into your first cycle of sleep.
You can also switch hands and hold the right little finger and right thumb,
But begin with the left side of your body,
As it's also more helping descending energy to move down.
Whereas the right side is helping ascending energy.
So this is the simple and powerful,
Very effective method for connecting with your energy circulation system to help calm your mind and body into a deep sleep.
