Hello and welcome.
I am Ipeki Williamson and I want to tell you something that took me a long time to be able to say clearly.
For a significant portion of my earlier life.
I was living inside a blueprint I had not designed myself.
Not entirely.
Not obviously.
I was making choices.
Pursuing things.
Building a career.
But underneath many of those choices.
Was a definition of success.
That had been handed to me rather than chosen by me.
A set of expectations about what a good life looked like.
What achievement meant,
What kind of person I was supposed to become.
That I had absorbed so thoroughly.
I had stopped being able to.
Really see them.
The moment I began to recognize this,
Was really uncomfortable.
It wasn't.
As dramatic?
But it was really uncomfortable.
Like noticing that a piece of furniture you have walked past every single day for years is actually blocking the light.
And you never realize it.
And here's what I have come to understand about the weight of expectation.
Because that rarely arrives loudly.
It doesn't usually announce itself as expectation.
It arrives as assumption,
As obvious.
As simply the way things are supposed to go.
Someone told you,
Explicitly or implicitly,
What success looked like.
What a good body looked like.
What career choices made sense for someone like you?
What kind of relationship was worth having?
What kind of ambition was appropriate.
And you heard those messages so early and so consistently that they began to feel like your own thoughts.
The question worth asking,
And it can take courage to ask it honestly.
Which of my current goals actually belong to me?
Which ones would I still be pursuing if nobody were watching?
If no approval were available.
If the only measure were whether this life at the end felt really mine.
This is not an invitation to abandon everything and start over.
Most people do not need to do that.
They need to do something.
Simpler.
Quieter.
And harder.
They need to bring their actual values into contact with their actual choices.
And see where the gaps are.
Here is a practice for you.
For example,
Take one area of your life,
Work,
Relationships,
Your body,
Your home,
Your social life,
Whichever.
And ask yourself honestly.
If I had designed this from scratch.
Based purely on what matters to me.
Would it look the same?
Think about it.
Where the answer is yes.
Celebrate that.
It is yours.
Where the answer is no.
Get curious rather than critical,
Judgmental.
And ask,
Whose expectation is this?
And is it one I am choosing to honor or one I simply never examined?
The life that fits you.
Is available to you.
It begins with knowing whose voice is running the show.
And deciding.
Whether to keep Listening.
I hope this makes sense to you.
Please take good care of yourselves.
