Transcript

In this meditation we investigate the power of saying yes to our own experience just as it is.

I invite you to begin by finding a comfortable posture sitting on the chair or the cushion of the bench or if you're more comfortable lying down.

Allow your attention to come into the body.

Experience whatever sensations are alive for you right now.

Whatever is presenting itself in your experience just to let it be as it is.

You might take some full breaths letting go of any tension or holding on the out-breath.

And to begin I'd invite you to bring to mind a situation,

Perhaps a current situation or a recent one of conflict or pain or loss or difficulty.

Allow the memory of that situation or if it's alive for you right now the feeling of that experience to be fully expressed in the body,

In the emotions,

In the mind.

As you reflect on,

As you bring to mind that experience,

The difficult experience,

You might connect with the bodily sensations that you're experiencing.

And allow yourself to rest with the strongest feelings.

What brings up the strongest feelings?

Perhaps words or images,

A belief about yourself or about another person.

And feel that,

Just be aware of the feelings in the belly,

The chest,

The throat,

In other areas of the body too.

Just how does this difficult situation express itself in your body right now?

And I invite you to begin by experimenting with what it feels like to reject these feelings.

Rejecting the feelings,

The story,

The unpleasantness and the difficulty.

See what it feels like to say no to this experience,

To say no to what's happening in your body,

In your emotions.

Bring the energy of no,

That sense of pushing away the experience.

Just saying no to this experience,

Resisting,

Pushing away.

And notice how that feels in your body.

Do you feel tightness,

Pressure?

What happens in your body?

What happens in your heart when you say no?

And you might imagine what it feels like to move through the world with the thought of saying no to this experience.

Just feeling the strength and the energy of that no in your body,

The effect on the mind,

The emotions,

No,

That resistance.

You might now take some full breaths and let go of any tension or holding,

Any contraction that may have come from that exercise.

And allow yourself to relax as much as you can.

Breathing,

Letting go,

Relaxing.

And now I'd invite you to call to mind that same experience,

That same difficult situation.

The images,

The words,

The bodily feelings,

The emotions that come up and allow them to be,

Just allow them to arise in awareness.

And now bring the energy of yes to this experience.

Acknowledging everything that's arising in you and responding with a wholehearted presence of yes to this experience.

Not saying yes to the overall situation,

Which may be a different question,

But everything that's arising in your own experience.

If it's difficult or tight or tense,

See what it feels like to bring the energy of yes to your own experience.

Let your feelings be held in this field of yes,

Saying yes to all of it,

To the thoughts,

The feelings,

The emotions.

And notice the experience,

Particularly in the body,

As you say yes.

Perhaps bringing a half smile to the mouth,

To the eyes.

Is there a softening in the body?

Is there any opening in the mind?

Whatever it is that comes up,

Whatever is happening,

Just to allow that to be as it is,

To say yes to this entire experience as it's expressing itself in you.

And you might imagine what it would feel like if you brought this quality of yes to the difficulties and the challenges and the sorrows of your own life as they express themselves,

Saying yes to everything that arises in you,

In the body,

The emotions,

In the mind.

Bringing the power of yes to your own experience.

Allowing your experience to be touched with the gentleness and the receptivity of yes.

Whether we accept it or attempt to reject it, pain is a part of living. Thank you for the reminder to handle it with a sense of ease.

I feel a lump in my throat and things just aren’t right when saying no to the difficult situation. Pushing it away doesn’t work. Thank you for helping me get in touch with these feelings.

This was a very powerful meditation that helped me bring curiosity to my experience as I brought in the energies of “yes” and “no.” So simple and yet eye opening.

By such a seemingly ‘simple’ exercise it suddenly becomes very clear why I should try to embrace feelings more. Very helpful, thank you Hugh. ☀️

An unexpected triggering (thinking of a past or present difficult time) but very clearing and cathartic. Am learning so much from Hugh's beautiful and gentle teachings.

Helpful in noticing different felt sense responses to cognitive choices. Appreciated distinction between the experience and my experience of the experience. Thank you.
