Hi there,
This is Taylor Short with Harmonious Return and if we're meeting for the first time I am a job reset coach and I am passionate about helping you find harmony in your job and your life.
And I do that through a number of modalities but some of my favorites are mindfulness based techniques,
Nature,
And also human design.
Those are kind of my three pillars right now that I absolutely love.
And today I'm talking to you about the real need that we have to be authentic at work.
And it almost seems like an oxymoron,
Right,
When we're talking about that.
Is authentic at work?
That doesn't really match and that's because we have kind of created this workspace,
This work industry,
This workforce.
I'm speaking of it as a whole collective generalization in the United States and probably outside in a lot of other countries.
But we've kind of created this workspace where it doesn't really invite individuality.
It doesn't really invite authenticity.
It's kind of becoming this thing where it's like a buzzword and it's a cool thing to say.
Yeah,
We want everybody to be unique and individual.
But then,
Not really.
You know what I'm saying?
So I want to talk a little bit about this today.
As we kind of went through the great resignation and then it was called the great reshuffling and I'm sure there have been other terms for it,
But what we saw after the pandemic was this massive paradigm shift,
If you will,
In how people related to their jobs.
And I think that there are a number of reasons why that happened,
But I think one of the main reasons that we saw such a massive shift,
At one point we were looking at,
I was seeing numbers of up to 90% of people were considering leaving their jobs.
So that doesn't just say that it's one industry.
That doesn't say that it's just one type of generation.
That's everyone,
Right?
When you have something that's doing a complete turnover,
I would say that that is a broken system and we can go off on tangents in another place and another time about broken systems and how many of them we have.
But when we see that,
It means that something is happening overall in our workspace,
In our work industry,
In our workforce that isn't working.
And one of those main drivers,
What I believe is the inability to be our authentic selves at work.
And what happened is when the pandemic happened,
These are all my opinions,
Okay?
So what happened when the pandemic happened is we were all forced to stop.
We didn't really want to,
But we were all forced to stop and pause.
And then we had this kind of chance to do some soul searching on a massive level of like,
What's really important in my life?
Do I really want to be doing this job?
Do I really want to be with this person?
Do I really want to be living here?
We just had this time to pause.
It's kind of a forced time to pause on whether or not we were happy and where we wanted to be.
And then also this opportunity to us to really dive into who we were authentically.
Maybe we had forgotten that with all of the noise.
And then you have this massive pause in a pandemic and we get to really do some soul searching and figure out who we really are,
What do we really want?
And so then we start to look at people being in these workplaces where they don't feel like they really match with their authentic selves.
They can't show up as themselves.
This is again,
My opinion,
And it kind of creates this unrest.
I talk a lot about authenticity at work and it's why I really love human design.
And I'll talk about that a little bit more later.
But what we were seeing is kind of this split person that we were having to be,
Almost as we were being actors.
So we would be this free carrying,
Free flowing,
Authentic version of ourselves.
And we were outside of work and then we would kind of suit up,
Maybe literally suit up to go to work and put this,
I'm using air quotes right now,
Put this work self on and hide our authentic self.
Or maybe we would have a little bit of us that we felt safe to be at work.
But for the most part,
We're this guarded individual who's not really our full authentic self.
And when we have that,
It begins to create this massive unrest within ourselves,
Within our internal self,
Because it's like,
I want to be me,
But I can't be me,
But I'm still going to show up as somebody else.
And if you think about that,
Doing that every day when you go to work,
That's exhausting to try to be someone else that we are really not exhausting.
And so I think what we've seen in the workplace and beyond is just this paradigm shift into how can we be more you?
How can I be more me?
And I'm so,
So,
So passionate about bringing this more into the workplace.
It doesn't mean that you have to leave your job to be more you.
It's totally possible to be more authentic in the job that you have right now so that it brings you more ease within.
It's totally possible.
And on a side note,
Human design is one way that shows us a roadmap to how we are authentically individually unique and designed to be in this world.
And what a world would it be if we lived in a place where everybody was working and they enjoyed their jobs,
They felt like they could be authentic,
And we celebrated each individual gift and gifts that each person brings to work and our jobs.
What a place,
Right?
So just some food for thought for you today.
Authenticity at work,
Why it is so important.
And as I mentioned,
It's totally possible to begin to be more you,
The real you.
Whenever I say you,
I point to my sternum so you can't see me here now,
But I'm like literally pointing and touching my sternum because it's the you that's in your heart,
It's in your soul.
So you can be more you at work.
And when you have that,
You're magnetic,
You're unstoppable.
Your gifts are being seen and appreciated and you feel like you.
So imagine how that could shift your workplace.
Thanks for listening along with me and that's all I have for you today.
Be more you.
The world needs you.
Bye.
