The material we're going to examine together today continues the theme.
Really from the last few weeks,
But particularly last Sunday.
Because we're going to.
.
.
Make every effort to strengthen our understanding of why it matters.
Of why it is that We must be able to.
Possess our own attention if we.
Ever hope to transcend whatever this present level of self keeps introducing us to.
If we have any hope of transcending ourselves at all.
So I think we'll just kind of get going here.
I'll ask Kate to bring up the talk title.
And then we will be off and running.
The title of our material today is Remember these three things you've forgotten.
And return to your spiritual home.
Remember these three things you've forgotten and return to your spiritual home.
What if it was,
In quotes,
That simple?
That there's something.
That you can see you've not only forgotten,
But you can see it in a tangible way.
So this isn't some woo-woo idea.
But rather it's sort of a.
.
.
Boots on the ground and a way to begin understanding and why it is that we are so often caught up and carried away.
In these negative thoughts and feelings that are so painful,
Not just to us,
I might add,
But to everybody that we loose them on,
As it were,
Not knowing that they are.
Suffering from the same thing we're suffering from or we wouldn't do it.
So let's get into it.
Ever so quickly just to set the stage.
I think it was in one of my books,
Perhaps The Courage to be Free,
But I'm not sure.
I told a story about Solomon,
The wise old owl.
How he takes care of the country and all the creatures to make sure that balance is remaining in them.
And one afternoon,
He's flying over the woods,
And he hears an argument going on in a little ravine,
And he drops down in there.
And most of the creatures of the forest are there.
And they're having an argument amongst themselves that he catches as he walks,
As he drops in.
They're arguing about which one of them is the most contented of all the creatures.
And as he listens,
One has a reason for choosing himself.
Nobody can run as quickly as I do.
Another says,
Yeah,
But I can climb and you can't.
Another one says,
I have wings,
So you don't know what you're talking about.
Another one says,
But I can hide places that no one else can find.
So they're having this argument about who is the most contented and secure.
And Solomon,
Listening to all this,
He finally says,
Just hang on,
Guys.
Every last one of you is mistaken,
Which gets a.
A rise,
Of course.
He says,
The most secure creature in these woods is Pauline.
And everybody looks around and Pauline's not there.
Pauline's a turtle.
Pauline,
What are you talking about?
Why Pauline?
And then he says what our subject is today.
Solomon says,
Because wherever she goes,
She takes her home with her.
To understand.
Pauline,
The turtle,
Wherever she goes.
Her home goes with her so that no matter what the circumstances are,
She's somewhat like the three little pigs.
The one that builds their house of stone.
Nothing can break into it.
Nothing can take from her what she takes with her wherever she goes.
Before I go on,
I need to know that you get that idea as simple as it may be.
Because I would ask you,
What would that mean to you?
What would it mean to me?
To know that wherever I am,
Wherever I go,
My home has gone with me.
That would be different,
Wouldn't it?
And why would it be different?
Because what are we all the time trying to do other than imagine,
If not create some space?
Where through immaculate planning and suffering,
We're safe.
But we've been doing that our whole life.
You look at what your mind is doing all the time.
And no more does it come up with a plan or maybe even secure the possessions or the property or position imagined than circumstances change.
And they always change.
Someone disappoints us.
A plan is rudely interrupted.
Or maybe whatever it is,
Whatever that sense of security is,
We turn on the news,
We look at certain markets,
Whatever it may be,
It's gone,
Just like that.
So all the king's horses and all the king's men will try again to put Humpty Dumpty together.
But it doesn't matter how many times this shell-like nature of ours is put together,
There will always be something that undoes it.
Are you following me?
This isn't negative.
We're looking at facts.
And if you don't think this is a fact,
Then you shouldn't be listening to me,
Because I have nothing to help you see.
So it brings us to this question.
Is there another meaning of home?
Because home for me is wherever my mind lands.
On something I'm identified with.
What gives me that feeling,
What passes that sensation along.
And then my identification,
That's my home.
So that my home can't be separated from what I'm identified with.
But clearly we can see that what we're identified with is a subject to change as is the nature that came up with that equation.
Can we discover an inner place?
Where we remain safe,
Where we feel secure,
Even when life brings moments that challenge what our assumption of that safety and security is.
And if we're going to explore this question,
Which one day you're going to have to,
If you want to know anything about what it means to have a life rooted,
Sown into the divine,
We're going to have to see,
And this is our topic,
Where does my mind keep wandering away from me without knowing it?
It's not home.
It's looking for one.
If it was home,
It wouldn't have to go out seeking any sense of security or well-being,
Would it?
And yet that's basically all the mind does,
Measuring,
Comparing,
And then trying to create the next map for it to get rid of its misery or to find what it believes will make it somehow majestic.
So if you follow me,
Let's shift our attention to something.
I want to connect this last idea about a home that goes with us wherever we go to the story of the prodigal son.
So I won't spend time on this,
But I will say,
If you know anything about the story,
The prodigal son,
He's there,
Got all the stuff.
He doesn't like it.
It's not enough.
He wants his own kingdom.
And so he takes what his father gives him.
He heads out into the world.
Making sure that he's going to build himself some kind of castle,
A home,
A kingdom that will beyond any kind of being subjected to pain.
And the story goes at a certain point,
He's out there and he realizes this,
This I've,
I've wandered out into this world seeking fame and fortune.
And all I've found is starvation and,
And a sense of captivity.
So when does the prodigal son actually turn?
As it says he does.
And that's an important word.
When does the prodigal son return?
When does the prodigal son turn around?
Very much the meaning of the word metanoia as Christ used it.
He returns,
He starts when he wakes up realizing,
You know what?
I've squandered everything I've been given by my father.
And it's been for no purpose at all.
I'm starving out here.
And if I'm starving out here,
Having done the best I can to make for myself a kingdom,
Then whatever it is that's doing this is useless.
I mean,
It's useless.
You know,
That's a tough thing to come to.
We never come to a flat,
Straight-eyed idea.
Well,
This just doesn't work.
Because every time we fear something doesn't work,
Something works in the background to give us something else to work at.
Do you see that?
So he returns when he sees all of his wandering has proven useless.
And why is it useless?
Because in spite of all the different ways,
The prodigal son,
And you and I are the prodigal son,
The prodigal daughter,
How many times have you explained to yourself coming to another dead end,
Running into another situation that seems like it steals from you all that you've put together in your life?
He sees it's useless because he can't escape.
The suffering inherent in what are his now desperate circumstances.
Please,
I'll slow down.
He sees that he's unable to escape the desperate circumstances he finds himself in.
When he didn't go looking for desperate circumstances,
But rather conditions that would free him from that terrible feeling of desperation.
Every time you and I are in a negative state,
Blaming someone or something else for our pain,
We are in desperate circumstances that we blame on the conditions around us instead of the consciousness that we followed willy nilly into a world that produced nothing but pain and starvation.
So the prodigal son's suffering,
Produces the turning point.
The suffering that he's aware of produces the turning point,
The metanoia,
The new mind.
He sees how he's wasted his life.
Because his life has been connected to something telling him,
Go here,
Go there,
Do this,
Grab that.
Looking over and over again for what he believes when he finds it will set him free.
Only to find out he isn't free,
But now he's more encumbered by the very conditions he thought would be the source of his contentment.
And it is that recognition that prepares him to return.
Please,
Are you following me?
I must keep going.
I have so much to share today.
So if we think at all about this story,
Most of us just sort of assume,
Well,
The prodigal son is the prodigal son,
Not that smart.
I'm different.
He made foolish choices.
I make wise ones.
Yet how often do we leave,
In quotes,
The present moment?
Where we are with what we are,
What we have to pursue something other than where we are and what we have.
For the promise by that nature that we'll find something that will make us secure and satisfy us.
I mean,
If you can put it together,
We even follow,
What do you follow?
Resentment?
Regret?
Fear?
The hope to find freedom from some constantly irritating relationship,
Only to do what?
We wander,
Follow,
Only to find ourselves in some other familiar place of suffering.
Conditions may change,
But not the nature involved in them.
And if you follow that much,
I'm going to ask Kate to bring up the first key lesson.
This is a transitional point.
Work with me,
Please,
As I go through it.
Until we see the hidden reason for our anger,
Anxiety,
Fear,
And doubt,
Our suffering continues to be useless.
But when we can use these painful states to discover the unconscious nature directing our attention,
That same suffering becomes useful.
It not only shows us that we have wandered into a dark place,
But it also helps to reveal the unconscious nature that we have passively followed there.
I'm going to repeat that,
That we have passively followed there.
Please stay with this distinction.
This key lesson points out.
Often we see we're in a dark place,
Don't we?
Boy,
I'm in a dark place.
The minute that we have that revelation,
Something says,
Yeah,
You are,
And here's why.
And that it always points to someone or something out there.
That is responsible for that ruinous feeling we have.
So the person who disappoints us,
Fingers pointed at them.
Sudden uncertainty,
Oh no,
Must find certainty.
Some memory that comes along and troubles us deeply.
I'll just find another memory.
By the way,
When you have a plan to escape a painful memory,
You are looking at a memory you don't know is a memory because where else can you get the idea of what's next other than from the content of your past?
So for us,
When we have this blame,
And try to see this.
We believe that blame is the first step in settling our pain.
Finding something to blame is the first step in settling our pain.
But blame doesn't settle pain.
Blame is the key factor in its continuation.
Can you see that with me before I go on?
I can help make this very ordinary.
Somebody says something to me and it's cruel.
They make some kind of thoughtless passing remark.
What happens?
Almost an immediate reaction.
What's connected to that immediate reaction,
An argument begins within me.
Or does he think he is?
After all I've done for that person.
You know,
I should have said something,
But next time I will,
You know,
That dark inner dialogue.
And that dark inner dialogue is kind of coding the reaction to give it substance that makes it feel as if the me that that happened to is other than the reaction experience I'm having.
But see this with me,
See this with me.
Here I am in this inner argument.
My body is in the room.
Where is my attention gone?
It's not where I am at all.
It's on what I don't want and what I need to do about it.
So I'm remembering this offense.
I'm preparing a defense or imagining a way to confront the person.
And that whole moment has moved on and yet here I am,
Not knowing I'm sitting in my chair in my living room,
Having a conversation that is actually producing the pain that I'm trying to escape.
Try to see this with me.
I'm here.
And I'm blind.
My body is present and my pain is in the past or in the future.
So I'm asking you,
Can you see?
Do we consciously choose to spend that 10 minutes,
10 days,
Or 10 years in a negative recurring state?
I mean,
Are we sitting there going,
You know,
I'd really like to be as mad as hell right now.
I want to really rehearse this grievance and then bring it up again so that I can find a way around it.
I mean,
Who in their right mind says this would be a good time to really get anxious,
Get tense and stop breathing in general?
I mean,
It's silly.
So if the answer is,
Of course not,
We don't choose that.
Yet the fact remains,
In these moments,
We are identified with some conflicted state.
And we don't see how we have become connected to that conflicted state,
Because our mind jumps in and starts to point to the reasons why we're in the conflict,
Instead of being aware of the fact that we were drawn into it by a nature that can't exist without us being drawn into its world.
That's a key idea.
I want to know if you're following it with me,
Because we're making a big transition right now.
You might want to write it down.
We've talked about it before,
But I want you to see it as clear as possible.
First of all,
You can see this is useless.
But from where comes this useless,
Obviously painful condition?
And the answer is,
It is a creation.
It is born of passive attention.
It is born out of passive attention.
Don't get panicky.
What does it mean passive attention?
Well,
I just described it.
I hear something I don't understand.
And immediately I'm drawn into a feeling of being confused.
And that agitation,
Which guarantees I won't be present enough to understand what I'm being told.
So a lower nature in that reaction.
Has chosen for us what we are attending to.
That's what passive attention is.
When an unconscious,
Conditioned nature chooses for us the thoughts and feelings that we are attending to,
And it doesn't,
Listen,
Before we are aware that choice has been made for us.
So passive attention means that the summation of who and what I am in that moment.
Has been decided for me because I am taken into whatever those conditioned thoughts and feelings are that are telling me,
Giving me the reason for why I'm in that pain.
So the reason I'm in the suffering is because its choice has said you have no other choice but to try to deal with this according to what I am showing you has happened to you.
And by the time we even.
.
.
Barely conscious of that pain,
We've already accepted the account of that nature.
That we are now a captive of.
That's what passive attention is.
Did I communicate that well enough for you to follow?
Who in their right mind wants to hook up with hatred,
Anxiety,
Or fear?
I said,
Do you want to go hook up with hate today?
He said,
No,
Stupid.
And yet we find ourselves listening to these states.
As if they're trusted advisors.
Trusted guidance.
Each painful state brings an explanation.
And we listen to that explanation and identify with it.
And then that explanation makes our continued involvement in that unconscious state seem necessary,
Even right.
So I'm literally blind,
Unable to see.
That all I am being given to see and all I'm agreeing to see is being handed to me by a nature that all it's concerned with is its continuity regardless the cost to my soul.
So big transition now.
Notice how our mind.
Wonders.
This is something you have to do on your own.
You're sitting in a doctor's office.
You're at a stoplight.
You're at a restaurant.
You don't see it.
I know that you don't and it's not an insult.
The mind is wandering.
It feels like me.
It's wandering around.
It's looking at the color of the paint in the room.
It's wondering why the stoplight is taking so long.
It's looking at the person next to me in a beat down car or one better than my own.
And the minute my mind,
As it wanders,
Finds something that grabs its attention,
Then that attention becomes a temporary center of my life.
Because now I'm thinking about that car or what I could do or why they are that way are.
And I believe that all of that feeling is me.
When none of that feeling is me,
But belongs to a nature whose wandering attention fell on something.
And then I fell into that world.
World that it creates.
Please,
Are you getting me?
Hey,
Hey.
This wandering center,
What's the center?
What it wants and what it doesn't want.
So one moment,
Everything is what?
Revolving around some anticipated pleasure.
And then something happens,
An insult comes.
Now the center of my being isn't the pleasure of what I've produced,
But now my center is revolving.
Everything's resolving around an insult.
So without knowing it,
The center of our life constantly shifting,
Because we are drawn into a mind that wanders there so that it can find itself in the content of that condition.
So the center changes.
But our captivity to it remains familiar.
A mind absorbed in worry can seem very concentrated,
Can't it?
I mean,
You worry,
You can spend hours on one subject.
And though it may seem so,
That strong sense of self does not tell us whether we are conscious of ourselves.
It can't do anything other than tell us what it is that we need to think about.
And we can be so intensely occupied with this center and the world's occupied planning a better tomorrow.
And be totally unaware of the life that is unfolding here and now where I am.
Because I'm not here.
Kate,
Bring up the second key lesson,
Please.
Our senses may be functioning while we remain largely unaware of ourselves sitting somewhere,
Breathing,
Listening,
And reacting.
We receive impressions all day long.
Yet forget to include ourselves in the awareness of them.
And this brings me to the summary insight to this point in the talk.
Kate,
Please.
Read.
Listen.
Embrace and then work with.
Attention connects us.
With what we attend to.
The question is whether we are consciously entering into that relationship.
Or whether an unconscious nature is choosing it for us.
Our experience of life is inseparable from that connection.
Each old thought brings its familiar feeling and that feeling confirms its thinker as real.
We call them my thoughts without seeing how mechanically they have appeared.
If we can even suspect some of this as true,
Related to this passive attention that we live in,
We can begin to understand why the work to be present Why our wish,
In spite of how contradictory it seems to be aware of the onset of some kind of suffering,
We can begin to see how that's useful.
So he says,
I don't understand.
Why is being aware of your suffering useful?
I don't want to be aware of it.
I want to escape it.
Because we can begin to understand that we are drawn into that suffering.
By an unconscious nature.
Whose intention is its own and cares nothing for what we are.
So that instead of wandering into its world as we are always doing,
We begin to understand the necessity of anchoring our attention in the awareness of that suffering,
In the awareness of that nature,
Whatever it may be,
And they're not separate.
We had an earlier example.
Someone says something cruel,
This inward argument started.
Now we'll go back to,
Can I be aware of the thoughts passing through my mind?
My body,
My body starting to heat up.
That tightening in the chest.
And then how all of that coincides into this urge to defend myself.
Defend myself from what?
I say from you,
I'm saying it says.
It says defend me from you.
What I'm saying to you is you are defending yourself from your own reaction,
From the experience of it.
And if I can see what I'm defending myself from is the experience of my own reaction,
I realized,
Wait a minute.
I can't defend myself from my own reaction.
All I'm doing is feeding it.
So can I bring that into the attention of the moment?
And if you can understand that,
Then as opposed to passive attention,
This is where active attention begins.
Now we are intentionally attending to the experience and to the nature expressing itself through that experience it is giving us.
Its explanation is now something we can observe instead of identify with,
Because we are actively attending to the whole of the moment.
We can hear the insistence that you fell on your face here.
Something is insisting I justify myself.
But now I can see this demand to justify myself belongs to a nature that is always creating the conditions under which it feels like that's my duty.
Now I see it's not my duty because I can see it belongs to a nature that is not I,
But that I have agreed to become through passive attention.
And this is an important distinction.
Justifying a negative state sustains our identification with it.
Consciously observing.
That identification begins to create a new relationship with it.
Where instead of looking at anger and agreeing to go along with what it blames,
I can see this anger come up and I realize I don't have to agree with it.
I don't have to agree with it because it's in my awareness and whatever is in my awareness is not I.
It may be a movement,
But it is certainly not who and what I am.
So we can begin to see all of this movement inside of us without handing it the authority to direct our next action.
So I'm going to make a big transition now,
If you're with me.
Everybody following.
Because this is what always comes up.
How do we begin?
To do this.
Because the truth is,
For the most part.
.
.
If we,
If,
And when we do wake up,
It's usually because our mind has already come and collected us.
I'm already knee deep.
In all of these self-kicking actions or whatever's going on.
How do we begin when our mind is already doing its best to carry us away?
And here's the answer.
And then we're going to look at the three special things we've forgotten.
That we need to remember.
We have to return to something immediate.
We have to return to something that is here.
Not there,
Not then,
But something that is here.
And what is it that is always here?
Where we are.
And that is.
Our sensation of being where we are and as we are.
In other words.
Our senses have been functioning all along.
This body and its sensations have never left.
They've never gone anywhere.
They're always in the same place,
Connected to the world that is bringing them the impressions that are producing this sensation.
But we get carried away by a mind that wants to know what these sensations are,
Starts to think about them and then draws us into this passive state where now something is telling us why we're feeling what we're feeling.
Why in the name of God,
Do I need anything to tell me why I'm feeling what I'm feeling?
Do you understand the question?
So my attention is everywhere except for what?
On me.
On this body.
We're moved around by reactions while we're sitting in a room.
See it.
We're moved around by reactions while we're sitting still in a room.
So the question is,
How can we begin to turn around?
To reverse our present situation.
And not just choose in the middle of some stressful,
Agitated moment,
Not just,
I should return.
But rather to be where we ought to be prior to being dragged out into that world of the prodigal son,
Where all we do is keep squandering our life forces,
Hoping to find freedom in something that in quotes,
We're going to control and create.
You got the question?
Because I'm gonna bring up,
I'm gonna ask Kate now to bring up.
The Special Writing.
At least the first part.
The title of it is.
.
.
Remember these three spiritual,
Remember these three things.
Yeah.
These are three,
Remember these three special things.
And realize spiritual freedom.
Remember,
We're talking about what happens when we're carried away.
And this whole talk came out of one thing,
And I was going to tell a story,
But I won't have time to do it.
Imagine a student comes to the master and says,
I don't understand it.
I can quote every scripture.
I understand all of these things,
But there must be something I'm forgetting.
And now the first of these three things that we need to remember is what the teacher says to the student.
You have forgotten that you are not your body.
And as you become aware of sensation,
I'm sorry,
You have forgotten that you have a body.
Re-enter it.
Come back to the immediate sensation of being here.
Feel your feet,
Your hands,
Your breathing.
Let this living contact In the moment,
Interrupt the unconscious movement that has taken your attention passively into its story.
You've forgotten you have a body.
Really,
It's remarkable if you see it.
Of course I've forgotten I have a body.
I'm everywhere and doing anything other than being in it because what's passing through it as a result of my reactions says,
Get away from there.
And the more I resist having a body,
Meaning being in a body that is registering and revealing everything that has been created in it,
I seek freedom somewhere else.
There is no freedom outside of being present to what is being presented to you as you're sitting there.
You have forgotten that you have a body.
You get the first one.
Now the second thing you have forgotten.
You've forgotten that you are not your body.
You have forgotten.
First,
You've forgotten you have one.
Now you've forgotten that you're not your body.
You're not that psychological body.
That psychological body is in you.
You're not that body of thought.
That body of thought belongs to the past.
Does it exist?
Yes,
But it's not you.
You have forgotten that you are not that body of thoughts and feelings.
And as you become aware of the sensation,
Of being in your body,
It includes the awareness in which that sensation appears.
So here's the appearance of the sensation that this psychological body is running and jumping through.
And at last I can see A,
I'm in my body and while I'm in my body,
The real body,
The real moment,
I can see all of these sensations being produced.
All of these reactions,
All of the things I'm being drawn to do to escape.
And I can see none of that's mine.
So if.
If I don't forget that I have a body.
And at the same time,
I don't forget that I'm not whatever that psychological body may be.
I mean,
Do you want to claim that body of pain?
Or would you like to be present enough to it to recognize that is not who you are,
But rather a passing set of sensations due to some unsuspected condition changing?
So see that none of these sensations,
These thoughts,
These feelings,
None of them,
Let alone their need.
Cause every one of those,
Oh my,
Oh,
Oh,
Every one of them comes up with what a need.
To do what?
Fix it!
So to see them is to realize their need has no right to claim the whole of who and what you are.
And yet,
That's what happens because that's what identifying with them does.
So one,
You've forgotten you have a body.
Two,
You've forgotten that you are not your body.
And the last one,
Number three.
Kate,
Please.
You have forgotten that if you wish to be free,
You have to return to square one.
You have forgotten that if you wish to be free,
You must return to square one.
What is square one?
The point of connection between above and below,
Between heaven and earth.
The point of connection between here and now.
And the registration of it.
And that return.
Into the here and now.
Into the awareness of the sensations of the body.
That's what the here and now is.
It isn't some silly,
Spiritual,
Self-consoling consideration.
Here and now exists for us because this body in one world is anchored into what is here and now in terms of passing time.
But within that body is another world that is anchored in a completely different level of being.
And that's here and now the relationship between the two worlds,
The cross,
The vertical and horizontal line meeting each other.
So we've forgotten that if we want to be free,
If we even want to start working to be free,
We've got to return to square one.
Now that return doesn't erase whatever has happened,
But what it does is bring us into a conscious relationship with what is actually happening to us.
Listen.
If you are aware.
Of what you were doing to your body when you're visiting some regret.
Full of some kind of resentment.
If you were aware what your poor body is going through,
If you even had bodily awareness,
You wouldn't consent to be a captive of that condition.
You'd see,
You know what?
This pain is telling me freedom will be later.
But my body's telling me this pain is here and now,
And I need to let go of whatever it is that I'm clinging to that's creating it.
So being here at square one brings us into conscious relationship with what we are in relationship with in that moment.
So square one,
And I get it.
Square one may sound like.
I've failed.
Like starting over proves I'm of no use.
I don't understand anything.
No,
That's not square one.
Seeing something talking to you and judging you is square one,
Because then you know,
Whatever it is belittling you isn't you.
So starting over,
Square one means returning to the only place where it's possible for us to see what's directing us.
I said earlier,
When you're directed to go dump on somebody or get negative and fall into a depression and you're given all the reasons,
You can't see you've been directed to do that because in a state of passive attention,
You just said,
Okay.
But now actively attending in my body.
I can see something talking to me.
I can see something pulling on me.
I can see something saying you need to be afraid.
And it's critical to understand you can't do this work yesterday or let alone in some tomorrow when you'll be better suited to understand what you need to understand.
We begin square one where thought and feeling meets our awareness of them.
Where mind.
.
.
Body.
And emotion.
Meats.
That is square one.
And our awareness of that places us in that relationship where we can see what is tempting us to become set against ourselves or others,
Instead of becoming someone who's determined,
Because of some consequence,
To Get past that moment.
And if you can see this with me,
The prodigal son.
That story now.
Comes pretty close to us,
If you can make the connection.
Because I can be sitting in a restaurant waiting for my food and my mind can wander over onto the cook.
And I don't like the way the cook looks for whatever reason.
So here I am,
I was enjoying a pleasure a moment ago,
Anchored in that idea of the food coming.
Next thing I know,
I'm a captive of a reaction to the appearance of someone.
And I have no idea how I got there.
My mind passive,
Asleep,
Wanders around looking for something that can give it a temporary center.
And the moment it finds that temporary center,
It feels complete,
While we are left as we are trying to resolve whatever the conflict is produced in something that is no longer in the moment,
But rather outside of it trying to find what?
The home.
Our True Home.
So seeing what we have followed.
Instead of just blindly following it,
Can begin No,
Is the beginning of our return.
They're inseparable.
Seeing that my attention was drawn into this regret,
This anger,
This resentment,
This plan for tomorrow,
Another escape.
Oh,
It's going to be beautiful.
If I can see that for a split second,
That is the beginning of returning to my home because I gain that glimpse because something in me is not part of the movement of that thought or that feeling.
Then I don't have to try to complete myself through another round of arguing with the past or planning for the future.
Because now,
As I remember what I've forgotten,
That I have a body and that I am not the body that is,
And I'm not that,
If I remember that,
I don't have to do anything other than just as best I can.
Situate myself as properly as possible.
In this interior position where my attention is active.
And it's active because I am in my body.
And while I'm in my body,
I can see everything moving through it and know that whatever has come to carry me off has not come to take me someplace good,
But rather into the evil that I would not do,
But wind up doing all the time.
You're following me,
Everybody.
Cause I'm going to bring up the last key lesson.
Kate,
Summary key lesson please.
We cannot stop the mind from wandering by wandering after it.
We return home whenever we remember to be aware of where and into what kind of experience we've followed our unattended mind.
Start connecting this psychological pain.
To the passive state of a mind that agrees to identify with it.
Because in identifying with that level of mind,
All the promises sit there to the end of pain.
You can end the pain before it begins.
By seeing how it begins through a mind inattentive to itself.
That leaves us three or four minutes.
If anyone wants to make a comment or ask a question,
I have some time.
I can answer that if that would be of use to you.
Otherwise we can.
As I say,
Otherwise we can hit the road.
Up to you.
And Kate did post.
All of the.
Uh,
She did post all of the What do I want to say?
The key lessons so that they're there if you want them or need them.
So the road home isn't really a road or a journey per se,
But a turning of our attention again and again.
Yes,
The kingdom of heaven is within.
There's no distance between you and the safety,
The security of your true home.
How do we calm our mind when we're in pain?
Cindy,
I just spent a full hour.
You're not to try and calm your own mind.
The attempt to calm your mind is the continuation of the conflict it's experiencing,
Cindy.
You don't calm your mind,
You see that which is disturbing it,
And you stop saying,
I,
To it.
Why is my mind disturbed?
Because I'm reliving this moment.
Well,
Why am I reliving that moment?
Well,
Because I want to be free of it.
Wait a minute.
How can I be free of a moment that I'm agreeing to relive?
Oh,
I get it.
Passively attention,
Giving my passive attention to the re-stimulation of that particular sense of self has dragged me into the world that wants me to go into it so that it can keep me in its conflict and promising me some new freedom if I'll just go along with it.
I hope that helps,
Cindy.
It just feeds,
That nature feeds on the negativity it generates when we resist its conclusions.
The present moment.
And the awareness of it,
My father's kingdom.
Yes,
It is.
But for God's sake,
And I mean that as.
Purely as I can.
Never take any idea,
Let alone the feeling it produces.
As the proof that you understand that idea,
Let alone the presence that awaits you if you can get past the thought and enter into the relationship that shows you the need for understanding it.
The circumstances always.
Expectation of conclusions drawn.
Is always expectation.
Yeah,
The circumstance doesn't exist.
The conflict in a circumstance doesn't exist without an expectation that has come before it.
The conflict in any experience doesn't exist without our being identified with the expectation that came before that moment.
Definitively.
Yeah,
And I would recommend listening to this talk.
Several times,
I had to cram.
Quite a bit of material into a.
.
.
Into a 44-minute session.
It's difficult to do,
But I think all of it's important.
I'll just touch on this one thing quickly.
If there's only one thing you can remember.
When you start getting negative.
I forgot I have a body.
I just love,
I love that.
Teacher says,
What do I need to do?
What have I forgotten?
Teacher says,
You forgot you have a body.
No,
Don't ask,
Claudia,
Don't ask if this changes me.
See that it never has.
See that no thought can produce the spiritual triumph inherent.
The point of every talk.
Is the same.
It is to produce metanoia.
To produce a change in the way the mind presently sees life.
By awakening in us a nature that can see the mind and its passive attention forever,
Drawing us into a world of its own design.
That's why if you remember you have a body.
You're at least square one.
It feels like a weird connection between I am not the body and to be in the now connection to ourself.
We need to be present in the body.
The body that you need to be present in,
The first body.
Is this physical one.
It is the connection between what is spiritual and earthly.
The second body,
If you want to use these words,
Is that which can be aware of this body in its relationship.
That's the body,
Not only that we have forgotten when we don't know we're physically existing,
But that's the body that we enter into.
And that's where this return takes place,
Angelina.
