There is an art and a science to asking for a pay rise in an effective way.
In this brief talk,
You will learn about three core principles.
The first one is focus on the facts.
You need to shift your mindset from your need to their need.
It's not about what you need or want.
Make it all about what your employer wants.
And what do employers want?
They want their best employees to stick around.
And they want their employees to feel valued enough so that they commit deeper to their work.
So present a compelling case that it's in their best interest to give you a pay rise.
You do so by presenting all the evidence,
But letting them connect the dots and draw the conclusions.
To find evidence that they need to pay you more,
Think about the following.
Have your job-related duties and responsibilities expanded in the past year?
Have you done a really good job in some mission-critical project for the company?
How difficult or expensive would it be to replace you,
Considering the onboarding time of a new employee in the project?
Is your salary below market standards for your position and experience?
Do you have a unique set of skills,
Knowledge,
Or team report?
Have you been working extra hours?
Are there any metrics you can bring to the table to demonstrate your productivity and commitment?
Or perhaps any testimonial or praise from your boss or colleagues?
The second principle is present a growth plan.
Figure out what are the skills you need to improve in order to increase your value for the company.
It could be hard skills such as technical knowledge,
Or soft skills such as mindful communication,
Leadership,
And time management.
Show how you are growing in the areas that they need,
So that they feel it would be a pity to lose you.
If you're practicing meditation to focus better and learning more about productivity so you can remain more self-disciplined even while working from home,
Let them know that.
If you're taking any courses,
Classes,
Or coaching on these topics,
Let them know that.
An employee with strong focus and self-discipline is every employer's dream,
And they wouldn't want to lose that.
The third principle is be prepared.
Your attitude is extremely important.
So do your homework and come to the meeting with a sense of confidence on your value as an employee.
Speak in a calm and confident way,
But without being aggressive or threatening.
Stay grounded in the knowledge of your own value.
So these are the three principles for you to make a compelling case when asking for a pay rise.
