This breath practice moves in four equal parts,
An inhale,
A hold,
An exhale,
A hold.
This pattern is commonly known as box breath or sama vitri and slows the breath to roughly four breaths a minute.
Slowing the breath this way is thought to ease the body towards rest,
While the steady,
Even count gives the busy mind something to hold on to.
In this practice,
You'll inhale for a count of four,
Hold for four,
Exhale for four,
And hold for four,
All through the nose.
Some people find it helpful to visualize a square,
Tracing each side as they move through the breath.
Let every round be an invitation to meet both fullness and expansion,
And emptiness and stillness.
You can save this practice and come back to it anytime.
Let's begin with two breaths together.
Breathe in through the nose.
Release through the mouth.
Inhale,
Let your spine lengthen.
Exhale,
Let your weight soften down.
Before we begin counting,
Notice your natural breath.
Just as it is.
Let your attention turn inward.
Let the outside world fade into the background.
Notice the sensation or the sound of the breath moving in and out.
Be aware of the subtle pauses that exist at the end of each breath.
From here,
Breathe in and out of your nose.
And at the end of your next inhale,
Pause and retain your breath,
Keeping your body soft.
When you're ready,
Exhale.
And at the end,
Pause and remain here,
Empty of breath,
For a moment.
Take two more rounds on your own.
And familiarize your body with the sensations of pausing or holding the breath.
Now let's breathe to my count.
Inhale,
2,
3,
4.
Hold,
2,
3,
4.
Exhale,
2,
3,
4.
Hold,
2,
3,
4.
Inhale,
2,
3,
4.
Hold,
2,
3,
4.
Exhale,
2,
3,
4.
Hold,
2,
3,
4.
Thank you.
Hold.
Exhale.
Hold.
Hold.
Exhale.
Hold.
Now on your own.
Soften your shoulders and your belly.
Let your body know it's safe to be here.
If 4 count feels too long,
Shorten it to 3.
With each pause,
Can you find a sense of stillness?
If you lose count,
Begin again when you hear the next round.
Find that smoothness of the breath in each inhale and exhale.
Three more rounds.
2 more rounds.
One more.
Release the count and the shape of the breath and come back to your natural breath.
Let your body breathe now at its own pace.
And take a moment to check in and see how you feel.
Notice what has shifted,
However subtle.
Let's close with a breath together.
In through the nose.
Out through the mouth.
Thank you for practicing with me.
