Yemoja is a goddess in Yoruba religion, which originated in West Africa, particularly in Nigeria. She is considered the mother goddess, the embodiment of motherhood, fertility, and water. Yemoja is often associated with the oceans, rivers, and lakes, and is believed to be the protector of children and the source of their sustenance. She is also revered as the mediator between humanity and other deities, as well as having the power to heal and bring comfort. Yemoja is depicted as a beautiful woman, usually adorned with flowing blue or white garments, and often carrying a jug or a bowl filled with water. She is widely worshipped in various forms across the African diaspora, particularly in Brazil and Cuba, where she is known as Yemaya in Santeria and Yemanja in Candomble.

One of the most well-known and beloved African mermaid deities is Yemaya,

Also known as Yemoja.

Her full name is Ye Omoeya and that means mother whose children are the fish.

Now Yemaya is the goddess of oceans but this can be read like in two ways.

Either she is the goddess of literally the sea life or she is a mother of mermaids.

Yemaya originates from Yoruba religion which is still practiced in Nigeria today and other parts of the world.

Yoruba has its own set of deities that rule certain areas.

She wears this beautiful dress which has seven layers and those seven layers represent the seven seas.

She originates from the area of Ogun river which is the largest waterway in Nigeria.

So when people from Africa were brought to America and South America as slaves they brought Yemaya with them.

Yemaya rules the upper level of the sea.

So she's seen as a metaphor of a mother who provides her children and some people even say that when the waves are crashing on on the shore the tides are Yemaya's great cradle and she's rocking the all of us.

So Yemaya is metaphor of the ocean as well.

Yemaya is also a fertility goddess.

She has this voluptuous body and large breasts and her sensual walk symbolizes the tides.

Her colors are blue and white and turquoise.

The blue is the water and the white is the sea foam.

In some South American countries there are customs that women who worship Yemaya see her as their mother deity.

They have these female things in the altars like lipstick or makeup because they believe that Yemaya is the goddess of femininity and divine feminine.
