Lesson 1

Cerridwen - Stirring The Cauldron Of Creativity

Cerridwen was a powerful witch, endowed with the gifts of prophecy, inspiration, and spellworking. She had a magical cauldron where she brewed potions to aid others. However, once the intended purpose of a potion was fulfilled, its balance would often turn to poison. Like many witches we have encountered, she governs the realms of fertility, magic, knowledge, and death. While she is viewed as a powerful Goddess of the Underworld, her role does not primarily involve assisting the dead in their transition from this world to the next. Instead, she possesses a divine understanding of the eternal cycle of birth, death, and rebirth, applying this cycle to the natural world around her. Consequently, she is regarded as the keeper of the seasons and symbolizes transformation. Cerridwen is also seen as a patron Goddess of witches and is commonly described as a crone goddess, fitting into the Maiden, Mother, Crone mythology.

In the poems she is described to be a tall a beautiful woman who walks in the woods, usually dressed up into green and brown and she carries her bows and arrows, in the middle ages she was accosiated with Virgin Mary and she was given a blue hood, this happened when the church tried to convert people into catholism and for many centuries the old faith existed side by side with the new faith.
