Seeing a water spirit was often regarded as an omen, one that signified the possibility of someone drowning. In the past, when people pulled drowned bodies from the water and observed frostbite marks, they believed these were the finger impressions left by water spirits that had caused the person's demise. Many tales carried moral lessons; for instance, children were warned not to swim in deep waters, as the water spirit, most commonly known as Näkki, might catch them. It was also considered forbidden to swim or fish when others were attending church, and making excessive noise by the water could anger the water spirits.
