Transcript

There is a very interesting mermaid legend that comes from Peru.

From Peru's Cocta Cataracts Waterfalls,

Which is one of the world's tallest waterfalls.

It drops 2,

531 feet into a beautiful dark pool where a local legend says a wish-granting mermaid lives.

Until recently,

Few outsiders even knew this majestic force existed,

But according to a local legend,

A poor fisherman named Gregorio,

Who once lived near the remote waterfall,

Befriended the mermaid there and often spoke with her.

When Gregorio met the mermaid,

She promised to grant him a wish and he could have anything that he wanted.

Gregorio was a very modest man and he only asked for a good day of fishing.

And the lovely mermaid fulfilled her promise and gave him a huge bag of fish to take home.

The very same night Gregorio's wife began to clean the fish and she discovered a gold ring among them.

She quickly pocketed the ring without mentioning it to Gregorio.

And when Gregorio went to see the mermaid the next day,

The same thing happened.

He wished for a good catch and the mermaid granted his wish.

This time Gregorio's wife found a gold bracelet and just like the day before,

She hid it.

The wife became suspicious.

Was her husband a thief?

She thought that he might have stolen the jewelry.

So she followed him to the waterfalls the next day and there,

At the bottom of the falls,

She saw her husband talking with the most unusual woman.

Her upper body was silver and below the waist she wore a fishtail of glimmering gold.

And when the mermaid spotted Gregorio's wife,

She grabbed the fisherman and dove into the pool,

Taking him with her.

And the wife ran to the water's edge,

But Gregorio had disappeared entirely.

And he never returned.
