Welcome to Enhancing Recovery Part 1.

I'm Dr.

Lynn Brown.

Today's topic is Purpose and Service.

Here is a list of words that represent common roles that people play in life.

Use these words to complete the ranking for the statement that follows the list.

Artist,

Aunt or Uncle,

Boss,

Business Owner,

Caregiver,

Child,

Friend,

God Parent,

Grandparent,

Group Leader,

Group Member,

Handy Person,

Homemaker,

Manager,

Parent,

Sibling,

Spouse,

Student,

Teacher,

Worker.

Rank order the words to accurately describe how important the roles are to you.

One is the most important role to you down to 20 the least important role to you.

Using this information answer the following four questions.

One,

What do I care about?

What matters to me?

It is important that your life is a manifestation of what you care about,

What matters to you.

Otherwise you will not have a foundation of peace.

Being true to whom you are matters.

Two,

Whom and how do I wish to serve?

There are many populations that someone can serve.

So it is important to know who you are helping as a result of the work you do and how you live.

You also want to know how you want to be serving.

That is in what capacity you will feel most useful.

Three,

What do I want to contribute to my community or workplace?

What do you want to be giving to your community or workplace?

Four,

What can I put my heart into?

Joseph Campbell an anthropologist said follow your bliss.

I believe what he meant by that was to try to get work doing something that when you are doing it you lose all track of time,

You forget you are in pain,

You forget that you don't have enough money etc.

You become so engrossed in what you are doing that you are what you are doing.

That there is no separation between you and what you are doing.

If you find work that allows for this you will have job satisfaction regardless of any other circumstances and there is great joy and peace that comes from having this bliss.
