A Lie & The Truth

In this poem, Elliott highlights that we can wear many different masks in order to adapt to or manipulate the various situations we encounter, yet there is still always "you" beneath everything. We can fabricate our personality all we want, but the truth will always find a way out — and what a blessing it is to be vulnerable & free. Accompanied by music. No ending bell.

A lie and the truth.

A lie needs constant support to keep it up.

But truth you can forget and it is still there.

I get you to see what I want you to see.

Something I am missing,

Failing to be.

Ensnarled in a game I've mistaken for life.

I can fool him,

Her,

And them.

Even my wife.

I even fool myself with what I want to see.

Now my compass is lost.

I simply cannot lead.

My mask is not yours.

Yours is not my mask.

So much we wasted on what we wanted in the past.

I turn to the saints.

I turn to drugs.

I turn to the ones they say will help us no matter what.

Everyone has an answer for how it is supposed to be.

But only the divine kept silently still and waited for me.

A bird mask.

A Freddy Krueger mask.

An absurdly handsome mask.

A sensual mask.

A nasty mask.

A Geisha mask.

No mask.

A non-committal mask.

In the end,

They are just masks.
