The Science of Spirituality. On our fourth day discussing this big topic of Religion vs. Spirituality, we examine the science of spirituality by looking at current research that is attempting to understand the physiological changes that take place within the brain as a result of a spiritual connections.

Hello and welcome back to Unleash Your Peace.

My name is Ali Shoja.

I am your host.

I am a positive mindset coach,

A personal transformation expert,

A deliberate creator,

And your peace trainer.

And Unleash Your Peace is a peace training of sorts.

It is a podcast where every single week we dive into a different aspect of the internal world and we do that in order to shed all of that weight of the unwanted pain so that we can find lasting internal peace and you can live your best life yet.

When we live from this place of joy and peace and connectedness to that infinite,

Non-physical,

Potential part of yourself,

You don't just incrementally improve the quality of your life,

You actually exponentially innovate every aspect of your experiences on this physical plane.

You level up in a major way.

You become your whole beautiful,

Powerful self.

You become a deliberate creator and you become an uplifter in your family and your community and that trickles out into the world.

That's exactly my wish for you.

Now this week we are talking about a pretty sensitive topic.

We're talking about religion and spirituality.

We've talked about what's different between them,

What is similar between them.

And yesterday we talked about this feud that religion has with science,

So science and spirituality.

And today I want to dive a little bit more into the spiritual experience.

I received a question when I published the article that goes along with these podcast episodes on Monday that said one way we can describe these spiritual quote unquote experiences is through the body.

All of our brains work in a similar way and when all the same parts of the brain light up and a number of different people,

Boom,

They all have the same experience.

There's nothing to it.

That is exactly what I want to talk to you about today.

What is happening in brain research is so interesting right now.

What the technology is able to detect,

What science is able to find is really fascinating.

And as part of that,

There are people who are engaged in scientific experimentation and observation of those who are experiencing spiritual episodes.

Now what do I mean by spiritual episodes?

What I mean is a spiritual connection,

That feeling that is experiential,

That we cannot teach.

If you've had it,

You know it.

If you haven't,

It sounds like bogus.

That's just the thing.

You cannot teach a spiritual connection.

It is personal,

It is subjective.

But when we talk to people who've had the experience of connecting to that non-physical,

Of connecting to that spirit within them,

The divine,

The God,

The universe,

Whatever you want to call it,

You can call it consciousness,

You can call it pure awareness,

You can call it your subconscious mind.

Whatever you want to call it,

There's a very specific experience you have when you connect to it.

There's a clarity that comes from connection with it.

It happens during meditation.

Meditation is an easy act to observe where people have the opportunity to forge that connection.

There's a lot of research being done on people who are meditating and they are finding really incredible things like meditation helps preserve the brain,

For example.

It reduces depression,

Anxiety,

Social anxiety.

It changes,

It physically changes the structure of the brain and it improves concentration,

It improves attention span,

It helps with addiction,

It helps kids in schools,

It helps with ADHD.

There's a reason a lot of companies even are using meditation in the workplace.

Big companies like Google and Apple and Target use meditation.

Countless people,

Including celebrities who are very vocal about it,

Use meditation to keep themselves centered and focused and so on.

So the benefits of meditation are many and scientifically we can now observe and measure the benefits of meditation.

Let's go back to that question of our brains light up in a specific way and so on.

My question to this person was could it be possible that the act of meditation,

The connection,

The act of connecting to the spirit is responsible for the brain lighting up the way that it does instead of the other way around as he was asserting.

And if it is the act of meditation that is causing the brain to light up in this way,

There is research that shows it.

Dr.

Joe Dispenza,

Whom I've mentioned a few times throughout these eight weeks we've spent together,

Actually does exactly that.

He literally measures brain activity while people are meditating.

But he also takes it one step further.

His workshops are famous for people experiencing spontaneous remissions.

So people come with certain ailments and then during one of his meditations,

They experience a mystical or supernatural event in which whatever their ailment was heals and it happens during meditation.

And because Dr.

Joe measures brain activity during these events,

He can isolate the moment this happens and he can isolate what is actually happening inside the brain when the body heals itself.

And it is fascinating.

If you're interested in this research,

Two of his books specifically speak about this research.

One of them is You Are the Placebo and the other one is called Becoming Supernatural.

Really do check those out.

I was at one of his advanced workshops when the neuroscientist who went up there at the end of the workshop to speak about this research,

He started talking about how the first time he was able to see the brain activity of someone in meditation,

He was absolutely shocked.

He thought this person is going into seizure because there was so much brain activity,

There was so much electricity running through that brain that the machines,

The technology was not able to measure it.

It showed the brain of somebody going into seizure and yet when they looked at the person's face,

A look of complete bliss was on this person's face.

If you've experienced this connection,

This supernatural event,

This spiritual event of completely connecting and becoming one with your inner being,

You know exactly what it means.

Now from the outside,

From a scientific perspective,

From a measurement perspective,

That's what it looks like.

But from the inside,

I can only tell you my experience of it,

What it feels like when I'm able to connect in this complete beautiful way to that non-physical beingness that is within me.

And I can tell you that the feeling is quite incredible.

It feels like my body no longer exists,

I no longer exist,

My identity no longer exists and I expand and become literally the universe.

And that separation between my identity and the identities of all things ceases to exist.

I become nothing and in that nothingness,

I become everything.

It is simply pure consciousness and the feeling that exists is one of complete joy,

Of complete love.

And that is why when they were measuring this person's brain activity and all of those machines told them that she's experiencing a seizure,

That there's so much activity in that brain,

That there's so much electricity and energy running through that brain,

Surging through that brain,

Every part of that brain is lit up,

Literally lit up.

When the machines are showing that,

What that person is actually experiencing is a feeling of complete love and of complete joy.

That is a spiritual connection.

And that is what each of us has the capability and ability to experience.

And that's also something when you experience it once,

It never leaves you.

It never stops being a part of you because in that moment of connection,

Your consciousness literally expands.

It becomes more and you become more,

You become so much more infinite than you were moments before.

I will leave you with that on this episode.

If you have any thoughts or questions about anything I've shared so far,

I really do appreciate that.

And until tomorrow,

When we come back and we conclude this really kind of sensitive but fascinating,

I hope you're finding it fascinating topic of science,

Religion and spirituality.

I wish you a peaceful day.
