Welcome.
Before we begin.
I'd like to share a thought with you.
Many of us have learned.
Often without realising it.
That rest is something to be earned.
We tell ourselves that we will slow down once everything is finished.
Once the emails are answered,
Once the house is clean,
Once everyone else has what they need.
But the list has a way of growing faster than we can complete it.
And so rest becomes something that always belongs to tomorrow.
Perhaps you have noticed that even when you do stop,
It does not always feel restful.
Your body may be still.
But your mind keeps searching for the next responsibility.
You wonder if you should be doing something more.
Something useful.
Something productive.
If any of that feels familiar,
You are not alone.
Today.
I would like to offer you a different possibility.
What if rest is not a reward?
What if it is part of how we care for ourselves?
What if your body has not been asking you to do more?
But simply to listen.
For the next few minutes.
Nothing is expected of you.
There is nowhere to be.
Nothing to accomplish.
Nothing to prove.
You don't have to earn these moments.
They already belong to you.
Let us begin.
Allow yourself to settle into a comfortable position.
Whether you are sitting,
Or lying down.
Let your body feel fully supported.
If it feels comfortable.
Gently close your eyes.
Or soften your gaze.
Take one slow breath in through your nose.
And an easy breath out through your nose or your mouth,
Whatever feels right.
There is no special way you need to breathe.
Simply notice the quiet rhythm.
That has been with you all day.
Breathing in.
And breathing out.
Notice the places where your body is making contact with the chair,
The sofa,
The bed,
Or the floor.
Feel yourself being held.
Nothing to hold up.
Nothing to carry.
Just this moment.
As you continue breathing,
Imagine.
Setting down an invisible backpack.
Inside it are responsibilities,
Expectations,
Plans,
Worries,
The things that you have been carrying,
Perhaps without even noticing.
You do not have to throw the backpack away.
You're simply setting it beside you for a little while.
It will still be there later if you need it.
For now.
Allow your shoulders to become lighter.
Notice your forehead.
Softening.
Your jaw.
Unclenching.
And relaxing.
Your neck releasing.
Allowing this gentle softening to move through your chest.
Your arms.
Your hands.
Your abdomen.
Your hips,
Your legs.
Your feet.
There is nothing you need to make happen.
Your body.
Already knows how to soften when it feels safe.
Because your nervous system invites it to.
Take another slow breath.
As you breathe.
Imagine welcoming ease.
And imagine letting go of the effort of holding everything together.
You may notice thoughts appearing.
Things you still need to do.
Decisions waiting to be made.
This is what minds do.
You do not need to fight your thoughts.
Simply notice them.
Thank them for trying to help.
And gently return to your breath.
Again?
And again.
Without frustration.
Without judgment.
And I now,
Quietly.
Invite you to repeat these words to yourself.
I am allowed to rest.
I do not have to earn stillness.
My worth is not measured by my productivity.
Rest is part of caring for myself.
Allow these words to settle within you.
Perhaps they feel true.
Perhaps they do not.
Either is OK.
You are simply planting a small seed.
One that may continue to grow long after this practice has ended.
Imagine.
Now,
Each breath is filling your body with quiet kindness.
Not energy for doing.
Not pressure to become someone different.
Simply kindness.
Notice what changes when you stop asking yourself to achieve something in this moment.
Perhaps your breathing becomes a little slower.
Perhaps your body feels a little heavier.
Perhaps nothing changes at all.
Whatever you notice is enough.
Rest does not ask you to perform.
It simply asks you to be here.
Remain here for a few quiet breaths.
As we begin to return,
Notice once again the surface beneath you.
Feel the support that has been there all along.
Take a deeper breath.
And slowly let it go.
Gently begin to bring movement back into your body.
Maybe stretching in whatever way feels comfortable.
There is no rush.
Take your time.
Before you return to the rest of your day.
I would like to leave you with one final thought.
The world will often celebrate how much you accomplish.
But your body celebrates something different.
It celebrates the moments when you pause,
When you breathe,
When you listen.
When you allow yourself to recover.
May today remind you that rest is not something you have to deserve.
It's one of the ways you honor your own humanity.
Thank you for sharing this time with me.
May you carry this gentleness with you into the rest of your day.
And if you find yourself needing it again.
Know that you can always Return.
One breath at a time.
